Windjammer at Sail 2000

The Sail Bremerhaven is one of the largest windjammer meetings in Europe and the world.

History of the Sail

The Sail was held for the first time in 1986 in Bremerhaven . Events followed in 1990 (Windjammer), 1992 ( Deutscher Seeschifffahrtstag ) and 1995, before a five-year interval was set for the future. So the next Sail took place during the in Hannover held Expo 2000 instead. After the 2005 event (August 10th to 14th), a small sail (Lütte Sail) was organized to bridge the period from August 27th to 31st, 2008. The festival mostly stretches from the Kaiserhafen in the north to the fishing port in the south, but most of the ships are moored in the New and Old Port , in whose areas most of the land attractions are located.

Traditionally, the sail begins unofficially with the so-called “sail in”, the acclaimed entry of tall ships up the Lower Weser into the ports. The flagship of the event is often the German training ship Gorch Fock . Should the Gorch Fock not take part, the Alexander von Humboldt or the Alexander von Humboldt II was or will be used as windjammer based in Bremerhaven. In addition to the windjammers, motor and steam ships, clippers , schooners , barges , cutters , tjalks , slups , sailing yachts and a wide variety of replicas of historical ship types such as frigates , brigantines , Viking boats or cogs also take part in the Sail .

Sail 2010

The Sail ran from August 25th to 29th, 2010. In spring 2009, the Bremen economic deputation approved a grant of 1,085,000  euros . Overall, it was calculated with total costs of 1,900,000 euros, partially covered by sponsorship money, and a net profit of 830,000 euros. The municipal Bremerhaven economic development company BIS (Bremerhaven Society for Investment Promotion and Urban Development mbH) expected around 1,000,000 visitors to the Sail, who also attended the event at the end. The hotel and catering industry as well as the retail trade would benefit greatly from this. With 324,000 additional hotel overnight stays in the city and an estimated 216,000 private accommodations, the BIS assumed an increase in turnover of up to 4,000,000 euros in the region.

More than 240 ships from 16 nations were registered for the 2010 Sail. The event was supervised by 680 volunteers, among others. The supporting program offered, for example, harbor tours, ship tours and theater performances. In addition, the harbor basins were lined with around 220 festival stalls. In addition to a maritime market and a sailors' parade on the central Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße , a pagoda village was also set up, in which 30 exhibitors and the partner cities of Bremerhaven presented themselves. Concerts and performances by choirs have been organized as well as large fireworks and sporting competitions between the course participants on the school ships.

The Bremen harbor concert , which was suspended on October 27, 2013 due to high costs, reached its historical climax on August 29, 2010 at the Sail. The 1393rd program was broadcast there for the first time on television on Radio Bremen TV .
