The sailing ship Alexander von Humboldt II is a steel German barque that is used as a youth and training ship as part of the Sail Training . In 2011 she replaced the previous ship, the Alexander von Humboldt . This is the first tall ship to be built in Germany since the barquentine Lili Marleen was built in 1994.

description

The ship is as Bark rigged. It is 65 meters long, 10 meters wide and has 24 sails with a total of 1,360 square meters of sail area . A maximum of 79 people between the ages of 14 and 75 can sail on the ship if they are fit. As a reminder of the previous ship and the sailing ships of the Bremerhaven-based Rickmers Reederei , the hull is painted green again; the original plans with a black hull (in memory of the Flying P-Liner ) were discarded after intensive discussions.

The owner and operator is the German Sail Training Foundation , which is a member of the Sail Training Association Germany .

history

The Alexander von Humboldt II was built from 2010 by BVT Brenn- und Verformtechnik Bremen , a company of the Heinrich Rönner Group . The hull of the ship was planned according to the old design of the Indonesian sailing training ship Dewaruci , built by HC Stülcken Sohn in Hamburg in 1953 . The stacking lift took place on May 25, 2011 . The final equipment took place in the BVT branch in Bremerhaven . On September 24, 2011 she was baptized by Brigitte Rönner in Bremerhaven.

In 2013, the Bark hit the headlines due to financial problems due to a lack of bookings.

Like its predecessor, it has been running green sails since May 2015, financed by the Beck & Co. brewery . Like its predecessor, the Alexander von Humboldt , the Alexander von Humboldt II is also used as an advertising medium for the brewery.

In January 2017, the barque crossed the Atlantic for the first time with the voyage from Cape Verde to Saint Martin and traveled to countries in South, Central and North America, before starting her journey home from Halifax to Le Havre in August and back to Bremerhaven in early September reached.

Due to the longer failure of the Gorch Fock (extended stay in the shipyard), the German Navy has been using the Alexander von Humboldt II to train its officer candidates since January 3, 2020 .

Ship operation

The operating concept of the new building remains unchanged from that of the Alexander von Humboldt . Divided into summer and winter trips, the foundation's purpose, namely to teach traditional seamanship, is to be fulfilled around 340 days a year in sailing areas such as the North and Baltic Seas, but also in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean. The remaining days are to be used for necessary maintenance in a Bremerhaven shipyard and for equipping the ship. A regular volunteer crew qualified according to their work on board guides the fellow sailors, who do not need any previous knowledge, in nautical work and in the four-hour watch. This includes, for example, activities such as manning the oars and lookouts, helping with sailing maneuvers such as setting or recovering sails, or household chores for the backstock .
