The KRI Dewaruci - other spellings Dewarutji and Dewa Ruci ; KRI stands in Indonesian for Kapal Perang Republik Indonesia ( Eng. "Warship of the Republic of Indonesia ") - is a three-masted steel barquentine built in Hamburg in 1953 , which is used by the Indonesian Navy as a sailing training ship . The ship is a member of the American Sail Training Association (ASTA) .

In the last ten years before 2007, the Dewaruci took part in several tall ship events in Europe and North America.

Ship history and travel

In 1914, the German ship officer August Friedrich Hermann Rosenow, who worked for HAPAG , was interned at Belawan (Medan seaport in North Sumatra , Indonesia). After the end of the First World War , Rosenow became a pilot in Indonesia, which was then a colony of the Netherlands, and took Dutch citizenship. After a checkered history in the Second World War , Rosenow taught at a newly founded seafaring school in Japan. After the end of the world war and the proclamation of Indonesia in 1945, he became an officer in the Indonesian Navy and was able to convince Indonesian President Sukarno to build a sailing training ship to train the young navy.

1953 ran Dewaruci at the shipyard HC Stülcken son in Hamburg from stack . The name comes from the Indonesian god of truth and courage, who is also depicted as the ship's figurehead. With her home port of Surabaya , the Dewaruci has been used by the Indonesian Navy as a sailing training ship since 1953.

1999 was Dewaruci an offer financial and material support in the USA when used to Gold Rush Sail and Tall Ship Parade ( Engl. For "Gold Rush sailing and tall ships parade") of the US state of California to San Francisco would. When the Dewaruci landed in San Francisco after a rough passage through the Pacific, the donor had withdrawn. The ship then had no funds for the necessary repairs and the usual supplies (fuel, food) it needed. In this emergency, the manager of the San Francisco Yacht Club , Russ Coggeshall, and his Indonesian friend John Hartono came on the ship, which could be viewed in port. They then organized a relief operation by the San Francisco Yacht Club to mobilize food suppliers around San Francisco. The Dewaruci returned first back to Indonesia, where the cost of their repair needs at a value of 10 million US dollars have been estimated. As a result, Coggeshall and Hartono set up the Friends of the Dewaruci Foundation to raise money for repairs. The foundation worked together with the “Yayasan Sahabat Dewa Ruci” foundation established on the Indonesian side in 2000, whose goals are to promote the Dewaruci and preserve them for future generations. Actions in Jakarta and - after another Pacific crossing of the Dewaruci - while the ship was in port on the US west and east coasts as well as in Hawaii managed to collect a total of 3 million US dollars. By July 2002 the Dewaruci was completely overhauled. In Germany, the Friends of Dewa Ruci Foundation was established to promote the ship , as a member of which the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce supports the work on site.

From March 28, 2003 to October 28 of that year, the Dewaruci carried out an Asia-Africa-Europe trip to mark its 50th anniversary, which brought it back more to European interest. The voyage took the ship across the Philippines ( Sabang in the province of Ilocos Sur ), India ( Kochi ), Oman ( Salala ) and Saudi Arabia ( Jeddah ) through the Mediterranean along the African coast ( Port Said , Tunis ) into the Atlantic and across the English Channel to the North and Baltic Seas. Under frigate captain Didin Zainal Abidin, the ship took part in the events Hanse Sail , Sail Amsterdam and Armada Rouen (both in 2003). The Dewaruci returned to Indonesian waters via the Mediterranean ( Naples , Alexandria ), Yemen ( Aden ), Pakistan ( Karachi ), Sri Lanka ( Colombo ) and the Philippines (Sabang) .

After trips on which the Dewaruci visited Shanghai (PR China) in May 2004 , she returned to Europe in 2005 and took part in the Tall Ships' Races windjammer regatta .

Due to her old age, the Dewaruci is to be decommissioned with the completion of its successor , which was already built at the Astilleros Freire shipyard in Vigo, Spain.
