history

The non-profit organization Sail Training Association Germany (STAG) was founded as early as 1984. It is an association of people, institutions and ships that support the goals of Sail Training. Under the leadership of the then STAG chairman, Captain Manfred Hövener, the plan was made to procure a tall ship for purposes of sail training.

For this purpose, the German Sail Training Foundation was founded in 1986 and entered in the foundation register on September 17, 1986. In addition to STAG, the founding donors were the then independent Bremer Brauerei Beck & Co. and the Bremerhaven-based automotive logistics company EH Harms (now part of the BLG Logistics Group ).

Also in 1986 the DSST acquired a former lightship from the Federal Ministry of Transport through the Northwest Waterways and Shipping Directorate in Aurich. This ship was under great personal contribution of members of STAG in the engine plants Bremerhaven in a Bark rebuilt and went then as Alexander von Humboldt in driving.

At the beginning of the 21st century, it became necessary to design a successor ship for the Alexander von Humboldt , as she was due to be decommissioned in the foreseeable future. As a result, the Alexander von Humboldt II, also rigged as a barque, was commissioned as the successor ship and built at the Brenn- und Verformtechnik Bremen GmbH shipyard in Bremen-Vegesack and Bremerhaven. On September 24, 2011, the Alexander von Humboldt II was christened in Bremerhaven. At the same time the anniversary event for the 25th anniversary of the DSST took place.
