Sail Training International is the name of a non-profit organization whose aim is the "development and education of young people of all nations, cultures and social backgrounds through the experience of sailing training" (literally: sail training ). The English term sail training not only includes general sailing training in the literal sense, but also refers to sailing training primarily carried out on tall ships with the aim of personal (physical and psychological) development and character building.

Sail Training International was founded in 2002 by 20 national Sail Training Associations (STAs) or organizations that perform Sail Training tasks. The organizations from Australia, Belgium, Bermuda, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Canada, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Spain and the United States of America were involved . Sail Training International has been recognized as a non-profit organization since 2003.

The organization organizes various activities such as regattas, seminars or conferences on the subject of "Sail Training". Sail Training International is known mainly through the implementation of tall ships -Regatten " Tall Ships' Races ", which are now tracked annually by hundreds of thousands of onlookers and / or visited.

Predecessor Organizations

In 1956 the Sail Training International Race Committee (STIRC) was established in Great Britain to organize a one-off international tall ship regatta. Due to the great popularity of the regatta in the public and with the ships involved, the regular Tall Ships 'Races (1973-2003 under the name Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races ), which were still organized by the STIRC, emerged from the first regatta . It was later replaced by the British Sail Training Association or the International Sail Training Association (ISTA), a 100% subsidiary of the British Sail Training Association, whose task it was to continue to organize the Tall Ships' Races.

Today's Sail Training International was founded in 2002 by the 20 worldwide existing Sail Training Associations and organizations that promote the idea of Sail Training nationwide in order to transfer the tasks of the ISTA to a new and independent organization - an organization that supports the STAs of owned and controlled by different states. A few months after its founding, Sail Training International took over the ownership of ISTA as well as its employees and the contracts with regatta and event ports.
