The Sail Training Association Germany (STAG) was founded in 1984 as a non-profit, not-for-profit association. The model was the British Sail Training Association . With over 4,000 members, it promotes the participation of young people in sailing trips as part of the so-called Sail Training. The term Sail Training means the "development and education of young people of all nations, cultures and social backgrounds through the experience of sailing training." The English term "Sail Training" does not only include general sailing training in the literal sense, but refers to A sailing training mainly carried out on tall ships with the aim of personal (physical and psychological) development and character formation. For this purpose, STAG arranges sailing trips for interested young people and adults in which they do not take part as a "normal" passenger, but as a member of the crew.

In addition, the association advises the federal government on safety issues on traditional sailors as a member of the commission for historic watercraft . The STAG is also a founding member of Sail Training International .

Various owners and operators are united in the association, including large and small ships, traditional ships and modern yachts, square sailors, gaff-rigged and highly rigged ships and boats. The spectrum ranges from yachts to the “ Alexander von Humboldt II ” with 79 berths.

The current chairman is Jörg Schinzer.

The association is recognized as a corporation serving purposes worthy of support and as a carrier of free youth welfare in Bremen .

Together with the other founders of the Beck & Co. brewery in Bremen and EH Harms in Bremerhaven, STAG founded the German Sail Training Foundation , which produces the barque "Alexander von Humboldt" (until October 2011) and the barque " Alexander von Humboldt II " (since September 2011).
