The directional radio tower in Bremerhaven is a transmission tower in the Bremerhaven district of Mitte .
Construction and task
The reinforced concrete tower was built between 1962 and 1965 and is roughly where the lock to the old port used to be . It is 107.3 m high in total. The 33 m high antenna needle ends at a height of 113.6 m above sea level . The tower carries numerous transmitting and receiving systems for marine radio purposes, level data radio , directional radio connections to radar antennas of the land radar chain of the Lower and Outer Weser and antennas for the AIS system . There are also antennas from federal and state authorities on the tower.
In the 7.5-meter-high tower head of the directional tower there is a visitor room accessible to the public at a height of 59 meters, and above it, at a height of 62.5 meters, a machine room. In contrast to other transmission towers with viewing platforms, the directional radio tower does not belong to Deutsche Telekom or a broadcasting company, but to the Bremerhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority .
The radio link tower is commonly referred to as a radar tower , although it does not have a radar antenna.
