The Waterways and Shipping Office Bremerhaven (WSA Bremerhaven) was a waterways and shipping office in Germany. It belonged to the service area of the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping , formerly the Waterways and Shipping Directorate Northwest .

By merging the waterways and shipping authorities in Bremerhaven, Bremen and Wilhelmshaven , the new waterways and shipping authority Weser-Jade-Nordsee was merged on April 8, 2019 .

Area of responsibility

The Bremerhaven Waterways and Shipping Office was responsible for the Weser federal waterway from the border with the Bremen Waterways and Shipping Office in Brake to the approach to the Outer Weser north of the island of Wangerooge .

In Bremerhaven, the Waterways and Shipping Office had a building yard where maintenance and repair work on floating and fixed navigation signs and radar systems as well as minor repair work on the watercraft belonging to the Bremerhaven Waterway and Shipping Office were carried out.

Area of responsibility

The tasks of the Waterways and Shipping Office Bremerhaven included:

Maintenance and expansion of the Weser federal waterway
Maintenance and operation of the floating and fixed sea marks, including the lighthouses in the Outer Weser
Order and safety of shipping and operation of the traffic control center in Bremerhaven
Takeover of electricity and shipping police tasks.

Outskirts

The Bremerhaven waterways and shipping authority included the outskirts in Blexen , which was primarily responsible for maintaining the power structures of the Lower and Outer Weser, and the Klippkanne base near Brake.

The Bremerhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority maintained a traffic control center from which ship traffic on the Unterweser below Brake and on the Outer Weser was monitored and controlled around the clock. To do this, it operated a land radar chain in the area of the Lower and Outer Weser, which consists of a total of eight radar stations. In the area of the outer Weser , the radar stations are located on the lighthouses Alte Weser and Hohe Weg as well as on radar towers specially built for this purpose in the mudflats and on the banks, which can also be found in the area from the Unterweser to Bremen.

First attempts with radar stations were made as early as 1953/1954, in 1965 the radar chain on the Outer Weser and the radar center in Bremerhaven were put into operation. By 1981, the Unterweser radar chain was put into operation in the area of the Bremerhaven Waterways and Shipping Office (up to the Harriersand radar station ).
