The Waterways and Shipping Office Bremen (WSA Bremen) was a waterways and shipping office in Germany. It belonged to the service area of ​​the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping , formerly the Waterways and Shipping Directorate Northwest .

By merging the waterways and shipping authorities in Bremen, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven , the new waterways and shipping authority Weser-Jade-Nordsee was merged on April 8, 2019 .

The new building is based on a competition design. The three- and six-storey building with a connecting structure of the Bremen Waterways and Shipping Office was built from 1953 to 1955 on the Weser near the Wilhelm Kaisen Bridge . The building plans came from the architects Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer , Ernst Sieverts and Partners from Braunschweig. From the upper floors onwards, the building is a pure masonry construction made of red, hand- painted facing bricks .

The building was awarded the BDA price in 1974 with u. a. the reasoning of the jury: “Even after 20 years of rapidly changing architectural views, the facility, which was built with simple means, has not lost any of the freshness of the first hour. The building represents a successful synthesis of architectural tradition and modern aspirations ”.

The building has been a listed building since 1999.

Area of ​​responsibility

The Bremen Waterways and Shipping Office was responsible for the Weser federal waterway from the state border Bremen / Lower Saxony to Brake (border to the administrative area of ​​the Bremerhaven Waterways and Shipping Office ), the Hunte federal waterway from the mouth of the Weser to Oldenburg , the urban stretch of the coastal canal in Oldenburg and the coastal canal in Oldenburg from the lock to the Hundsmühlen security gate and the Lesum and Wümme from Borgfeld to the confluence with the Lesum and parts of Ochtum and Delme .

Area of ​​responsibility

The tasks of the Waterways and Shipping Office Bremen included:

  • Order and safety of shipping and operation of the traffic control center in Bremen

Outskirts

The suburbs in Bremen-habenhausen , Bremen-Farge and Oldenburg as well as the building yard in Brake belonged to the waterways and shipping authority Bremen .

  • The suburb of habenhausen was responsible for the Mittelweser area and the operation and maintenance of the Bremen Weser weir and the lock system including the fish ladder at the weir system and the Lower Weser to Lemwerder .
  • The Farge suburb was responsible for the Lower Weser from Lemwerder to Brake, the Lesum and Wümme from Borgfeld to the confluence with the Lesum.
  • The outskirts of Oldenburg were responsible for the Seewasserstraße Hunte, the urban stretch of the coastal canal in Oldenburg and part of the coastal canal. In Oldenburg, the outskirts were responsible in particular for the operation and maintenance of the Oldenburg lock, the connecting structures between the coastal canal and Hunte and the operation and maintenance of the Cäcilienbrücke and the Hundsmühlen security gate.
  • The building yard in Brake performed maintenance and repair tasks on ships and machinery in locks , weirs and bridges as well as the navigation marks of the Bremen waterways and shipping authority. The building yard had a 110 m long quay and a slipway with which ships up to 30 m in length and weighing 200 t can be pulled out of the water.

Traffic control center

The Bremen Waterways and Shipping Authority maintained a traffic control center from which shipping traffic on the Unterweser between Bremen and Brake and on the Hunte to Oldenburg was monitored and directed around the clock. To do this, it operated a land radar chain in the Unterweser area, which consists of a total of seven radar stations and for which six radar systems were built in 1986 and 1987 from the mouth of the Hunt to Bremen. The seventh radar station of the Bremen traffic center is located on the existing operating building of the Hanseatic City of Bremen Port Authority at Lankenauer Höft in Bremen.
