The Mir is owned by the State Admiral Makarow Academy (University of Marine Engineers) in Saint Petersburg . At this university, young seafarers are trained for the Russian merchant navy . The students in the fields of nautical science , marine engineering , radar and radio sciences have to complete a practical semester on board this sailing training ship during their studies. This trip on the tall ship is not only used to learn classic seamanship (including character development). They are accompanied by professors from the university who, among other things, also teach them English.
The regular crew of the ship is around 55 people. Around 140 cadets can be taken on board; If the number of cadets is lower, there is also the possibility of coming on board as a paying co-sailor (so-called “trainee”). The Mir is often a guest in German waters at maritime events or port festivals . Last but not least, in order to earn money for the continued operation of the ship, paying guests are taken on board for day trips or overnight stays.
Under the leadership of Captain Antonov, the Mir acquired her reputation as currently the fastest tall ship in the world (according to her own information, 19.4 kn maximum speed under sail). In 1992 she was the overall winner of the “Grand Regatta Columbus 92-Quincentenary” for the 500-year discovery of America. She also prevailed against her competition several times on the tall ship regattas " Tall Ships 'Races " (formerly "Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races"). In 2003 and 2004 the Mir crew also won the “Friendship Trophy” at the Tall Ships' Races for having contributed most to international understanding and friendship during the regatta.
