The Frankfurt-Tempel in Friedrichsdorf ( Hochtaunuskreis ) is the first temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( Mormons ) in the Federal Republic of Germany before 1990, the second in what is now the Federal Republic of Germany after 1990 and the forty-first temple worldwide. After the temples in Bern ( Switzerland ) and Freiberg ( Saxony ), it was the third to be built in the German-speaking area. It was consecrated on August 28, 1987 by then President of the Faith Community , Ezra Taft Benson. The temple was built on the approximately 21,000 m² site of a noodle factory that was closed in 1982/83. The building is 28 m wide, 98 m long and (without the tower) 7 m high.
Since September 7, 2015, the temple has been closed due to extensive renovations until July 2018. The temple was originally supposed to be completed in July 2017, but the reopening is delayed due to unpredictable structural renovations.
The temple district includes the old federal states of Germany with the exception of southwest Baden-Württemberg, Austria with the exception of Vorarlberg, the northern half of France, Slovenia, Croatia, Afghanistan and the countries of Arabia. Because of the large catchment area, temple visitors usually stay for several days. A hostel with a capacity of around 120 people was set up for them on Tempelplatz. In principle, however, a church member who has a valid temple recommend is admitted to every temple in the world. In order to achieve an even capacity utilization of the temple, the local units ( stakes ) of the temple district are allocated certain weeks of the year, which the members there are to use preferentially.
The Church of Jesus Christ teaches that after death a person can enter different kingdoms of glory : the lowest kingdom of heaven is the telestial, the middle the terrestial and the highest the celestial kingdom - symbolized in this order by stars , moon and sun . These symbols were integrated into the forecourt of the temple entrance during construction: At the foot of the tower there is a sun in the ground, the stone arch at the entrance door stands for the moon and the stars are represented by two skylights in the underground passage leading from the reception opposite in leads the temple.
The stained glass window above the front door shows the tree of life that God planted in the Garden of Eden. In the Book of Mormon , this tree is also mentioned several times and is supposed to represent, according to this the love of God.
