The Bern Temple is the ninth existing temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first temple to be built in Europe. It is located in the Allmend district of the municipality of Münchenbuchsee in Switzerland, which has grown together with Zollikofen .

The temple is on the south facing .

history

The approximately 2.8 hectare temple site was selected in July 1952 by President David O. McKay and Samuel E. Bringhurst, then President of the Switzerland-Austria Mission. Architects were Edward O. Anderson and Wilhelm Zimmer. The groundbreaking ceremony and dedication of Temple Square were carried out on August 5, 1953 by David O. McKay. The temple was dedicated by David O. McKay on September 11, 1955.

For the first international stamp of this church, many different languages were spoken in the catchment area, the representation of the set talent (endowment) , the path of man from creation to return to God, a particular challenge. It was resolved by the Talent as a film, dubbed in all required languages, was made available. Until then, the talent of the appointed members was shown live on stage. All temples built later also work with the cinematic representation.

The temple was rededicated by Gordon B. Hinckley on October 23, 1992 after the interior was redesigned .

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the consecration, a 4 meter high statue of the angel Moroni was placed on the top of the tower on September 7, 2005 .
