BulletBoys (often referred to as Bulletboys or Bullet Boys ) is an American hard rock band that was formed in Los Angeles in 1986 and became famous with their first album, which quickly faded away.

history

Marq Torien, born Mark Joseph Maytorena, son of a trombonist from the Stan Kenton jazz orchestra , played guitar with Ratt . He was guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne for a short time after Randy Rhoads ' death , but was found too young and replaced by Bernie Tormé . Then he got a contract with Motown Records . During this time he worked with Stevie Wonder , the Temptations , Smokey Robinson and Rick James .

The BulletBoys formed in January 1988 in Los Angeles , California . Marq Torien, now singer, guitarist Mick Sweda and bassist Lonnie Vencent all came from King Kobra . The band completed itself with the session and live drummer Marc Danzeisen. Sweda stated in an interview that Jimmy D'Anda, who is believed to be her traditional drummer, joined in January. However, this is opposed to timely and retrospective reports. The first months were spent with Danzeisen in the rehearsal room and in small local rock clubs. In early summer, the change from Danzeisen to D'Anda was made. Danzeisen joined the Riverdogs in April of the following year , where he became a permanent member. The band name was chosen from a list of ideas. He should be aggressive, just like you wanted to face the music business you had bad experiences with. A demo was recorded with this line-up . Your manager distributed it to half a dozen record companies . Roberta Peterson, Ted Templeman's sister, got her hands on it at Warner Brother Records . She persuaded her brother to visit the Bulletboys in the rehearsal room personally and see the quality of the band for himself. The band owed the contract offer from the major label Warner to his assessment . Templeman, who had made a name for himself with his work for Montrose , the Doobie Brothers and Van Halen , was tempted to take on the BulletBoys.

The debut album, simply titled BulletBoys , was released on September 16, 1988. Thanks to some titles broadcast on the television music channel MTV , the album sold almost a million times in the US straight away. This mark was later exceeded. A first major tour with Cinderella and Winger was then made possible for the newcomers . Other roles as opening act for Bon Jovi , Ozzy Osbourne, and Living Color were followed by headline shows. The follow-up freak show was recorded from January to October 1990. It took longer than planned because Sweda broke a complicated finger. The producer was Templeman again, and the release took place on March 12, 1991 again on Warner Brothers Records. Over a million units have been sold worldwide. MTV also played the more elaborately produced music clips on this album in continuous use, especially Hang on St. Christopher . This piece is a Tom Waits - cover . Another cover version is Talk to Your Daughter ( JB Lenoir ). After the cover version For the Love of Money , which was released from the debut , in the original by The O'Jays , the new singles were not their own compositions either. Again you could do a tour with an established hard rock great, this time with Great White . Later that year they went on tour with The Scream . But that ended the streak of success, and the bulletboys were quickly forgotten.

The third album Za-Za (1993) produced again Templeman. The title comes from the film The Godfather III . In it, Joey Zaza is executed with the words: "For every Za a bullet". Other trends were prevalent in the music scene, so Za-Za didn't charter . Shortly afterwards, the band lost their record deal. Sweda and D'Anda eventually left the BulletBoys. From that point on there was no more consistent line-up . Guitarist Tony Marcus was followed by Tommy Pittam, who stayed for over a year. At the same time Robby Karras was the drummer of the band, which she also belonged to for a long time. Acid Monkey was released in 1995 with Torien (vocals), Pittam (guitar), Vencent (bass) and Karras (drums) . Then the group fell apart completely.

In 1998 Torien and Vencent appeared with Steven Adler (drums) and DJ Ashba (guitar). The downfall of the band and the resulting bad mood was expressed, for example, in 2000 when Torien, after being told his opinion, attacked Vencent with the microphone stand.

In the late autumn of 2003, Sophie appeared on her own label Bulletboys Records. The album was recorded and mixed at Jet City Studios in Hawthorne , California with producer Andy Johns ( Led Zeppelin , Cinderella, Van Halen ) . It contains nine new songs and a cover version of the Kinks classic All Day and all of the Night . The opening track Neighborhood , on which guest vocalist Sebastian Bach from Skid Row can be heard, was chosen as the first single . This announced single was obviously not realized. The subsequent tour with LA Guns and Black 'n Blue was canceled because a dispute over the bus driver's income had led to the tour manager being injured. In addition, the colleagues from LA Guns had demanded that Keri Kelli , who has already played through many bands in the glam rock scene, should no longer be on stage for both bands, but only for them.

In the following months, Marq Torien performed more or less continuously, alone as a participant in all-star events or with changing BulletBoys line-ups. In 2006 a reunion of the cast Torien / Sweda / Vencent / D'Anda failed . And so there was no new studio album. There was only one live album , Behind the Orange Curtain , which was released in April 2007. In July, a BulletBoys formation was among the legendary 1980s hard rock bands at the Rocklahoma Festival.

In 2009 the postponed album 10c Billionaire was released , after which Mary Torien (vocals, guitar), Nick Rozz (guitar), Rob Lane (bass) and Ryche Green (drums) form the line-up. In the fall of 2009, Lonnie Vencent returned. Tony Marcus, the direct successor of Mick Sweda, also rejoined the group. The BulletBoys were invited to a similar (just not as high-profile) festival as Rocklahoma had been on April 30, 2010 in Stockholm.

In the middle of the year, the regular members puzzled fans and journalists when there were suddenly two competing BulletBoys lineups, whose "newer" singer Andrew Freeman featured. Lonnie Vencent made the confusion perfect when he switched from this to the "older" one led by Torien in January 2011. In February 2011 Vencent was out again. At this point the line-up was: Marq Torien (still vocals and guitar), Nick Rozz (second guitar), Chad MacDonald (bass) and Johnny G. (drums). It cannot be determined whether the bassist named Tchad Drats in July 2011 is identical to Chad MacDonald (the hair length is not). In addition, Don Bish Dish was now on the drums. The previous drummer, whose full name was John Paul "Johnny G." Giosa, was killed in a car accident in 2011.

In 2011 the band paid homage to various industry giants in the form of a pure cover album . Been covered Motley Crue , Bon Jovi, Accept and Led Zeppelin, as well as Amy Winehouse and Eddie Money and others do not necessarily represent the rock attributable artist. There was a one-time reunion appearance on December 30, 2011 in a club on the Sunset Strip .

On June 9, 2015, Elefante ' (the accent is not on, but behind the e) was published. The album was recorded by Marq Torien (vocals, guitar), Nick Rozz (guitar), Aaron Samson (bass) and Shawn Duncan (drums).

style

In Allmusic states, the style of Bullet Boys had before it a bluesy have taken direction greatly from AC / DC have been affected and Van Halen. Torien's demeanor is often compared to that of David Lee Roth . Oliver Klemm ( Metal Hammer ) limited himself in his debut album review to the similarity to AC / DC, which is sometimes striking. Andreas Kraatz ( Musikexpress ) recognized a Van Halen and David Lee Roth imitation on the same album, but it was without any promising approaches. An example of Van Halen resemblance on the debut is Crank Me Up . According to Markus Baro ( Break Out ), passages from the successor Freakshow should also sound like Van Halen's Fair Warning . Even with the successor Za-Za the “Van Halen Groove ” breaks through. Fess can be cited as an example , who sounds a lot like the soloist David Lee Roth. The BulletBoys have been unfairly called Van Halen clones, says Taylor T. Carlson in his book HAIRcyclopedia Vol. 1 - The Legends . Werner Theurich, on the other hand, considers the BulletBoys “completely rightly reviled as Van Halen clones”.

They compared themselves to the early Montrose and Van Halen, but more in attitude than music. However, the debut albums of both bands were a sonic model for the production, which is why Ted Templeman was selected. The blues were added because it increased the chances of being played on the radio.
