Black 'n Blue is an American glam metal band from Portland , Oregon . It quickly became known as the “next big thing” in the US, but despite a loyal fan base, it never made a commercial breakthrough.

history

The band was founded in 1979 in Oregon and was originally called "Movie Star". The group renamed itself in 1980 first to "Loved By Millions" and from November 1981 then called itself "Black 'n Blue". In Portland, they only wanted to hear cover versions , which hindered the free development of the band, which is why they moved to Los Angeles in 1982 . Here they first appeared in a phonogram, namely Metal Massacre , an Independent - Sampler , on the other newcomers such as Metallica , Ratt and Malice were presented on.

Barely nine months in the glamorous metropolis, Don Dokken became aware of them and together they produced a demo in which Michael Wagener was also involved, who in turn made contact with Dieter Dierks . In January the band flew to Dierks' recording studio in Cologne. In the same year Black 'n Blue released their self-titled debut album on Geffen Records . This record contains what is probably the group's most famous track, Hold on to 18 . The sequel, namely Without Love , was released the following year. The sound of this album was no longer as harsh as the band had originally sounded, but had a more polished, radio-friendly production, which confused many fans. Although two tracks, Without Love and Miss Mystery , were released as singles , the group did not achieve chart success and the album was viewed as something of a disappointment. A third track from this album, Nature of the Beach , could be heard in the movie Vision Quest (German title: Crazy for you - Liebe auf der Wrestling mat ) and appeared as the B-side of the Madonna single Gambler , but was not on the soundtrack Album released.

In 1986 she released the album Nasty Nasty , produced by Kiss bassist Gene Simmons , on which Peter Criss and Sebastian Bach participated. In Heat , also produced by Simmons, followed in 1988 , after which the group toured supporting Yngwie Malmsteen and Lita Ford . With both albums the group tried to return to their original, rougher sound and succeed with it, but both attempts failed and the band broke up in 1989.

In 1997, the five members of the first line-up of Black 'n Blue came together for a one-off concert, which was released on CD the following year under the title One Night Only: Live .

In 2003 the band got back together, but without Tommy Thayer, who had meanwhile become guitarist for Kiss; Shawn Sonnenschein is the new guitarist for Black 'n Blue. The group went on tour and began recording a new album, Hell Yeah! should be called and was scheduled for publication in September 2003. The release was postponed again and again, most recently a release was planned for 2008, but neither in 2008 nor in 2009 Hell Yeah! brought on the market. In fact, the album wasn't released until 2011.

Black 'n Blue is still active and occasionally performs at festivals in the United States. Jaime St. James was in a formation called Wet Engine in the late 80s, then in Freight Train Jane in the mid-90s and, after a solo attempt in the early 2000s, singer with Warrant from 2004 to 2007 ; Tommy Thayer is still the guitarist for Kiss.

The band gave a concert in Portland on December 8, 2008 with their original line-up to support their longtime friend Kenny Nordone in his fight against cancer.

Jaime St. James left Warrant in 2007 and brought Black 'n Blue back together. The band played at the 2008 Rocklahoma Festival. In 2010 the group was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
