Papa Don't Preach is a 1986 song written by Madonna and written by Brian Elliot. It appeared on the album True Blue .
history
The recordings took place in autumn 1985. The song is about a pregnant teenager who, against the wishes of his father and friends, does not want to have an abortion or put the child up for adoption .
Elliot first wrote a rough draft of the song, and after Madonna's arrangement the piece received a plot. In writing the first draft, Elliot took inspiration from a number of students at North Hollywood High School in Los Angeles , particularly those who became pregnant as teenagers . At the open window of his studio, Elliot overheard various discussions and opinions about teenage pregnancies from students at the nearby high school. In 2009 the music magazine Rolling Stone asked Madonna why the title Papa Don't Preach was chosen.
“[The song] suits me very well […], I associate it with the Catholic Church and my father with his conservative nature. […] There were a lot of opinions about 'Papa Don't Preach' - everyone interpreted the song different, and that was great. So everyone wonders, is the song for a teenage pregnancy or is it more for an abortion etc. ""
The song begins with a string intro. In the following you can hear rhythm, acoustic and electric guitars , keyboards , drum computers and string instruments, the tempo is 116 BPM . The key is F minor. The intro is based on the music of Beethoven . The piece was number one on the singles charts in the United States and Great Britain.
Music video
The music video was directed by James Foley , who also directed the videos for Live to Tell and True Blue . Michael Ballhaus was responsible for the camera work .
In the video, Madonna plays a tomboy ; she wears jeans, a black leather jacket and a T-shirt that says “Italians Do It Better”. At the beginning of the video you can see the skyline of New York City , followed by childhood shots with her father, who is played by Danny Aiello . She sees a man and falls in love with him. During the refrain , she dances in a dark room in black mid- length trousers and a 1950s-style bustier . To visit her boyfriend, she follows him to his workplace, where he works as a car mechanic , and after work they both spend an evening for two. After the date, she finds out she is pregnant and after a long hesitation tells her father this. This is followed by an argument; in the end, Madonna and her father are reconciled.
The video won an award in the Best Female Video category at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards .
