background

Human Nature was written in relation to Madonna's previous scandalous album Erotica and the coffee table book SEX . The song includes sarcastic backing vocals in which Madonna asks rhetorical questions based on her real life, like “Did I say something wrong? Oops, I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex. I must have been crazy ”and the line“ What was I thinking? ”. The phrase "Express yourself, don't repress yourself" is repeated after the lines. Furthermore, Madonna sings in the song that she shows no regrets about her "fantasies" and calls on her critics to accept her behavior and her fantasies because it corresponds to "human nature".

Madonna's record label originally wanted to release the more radio-friendly pop track Don't Stop as a single, but Madonna insisted on Human Nature . The song is an early anthem of modern contemporary contemporary R&B music. In addition, it is equipped with an urban- hip-hop - Beat underlaid. The song samplet What You Need by the American hip-hop group Main Source .

In the United States, Human Nature became Madonna's second straight single that did not reach the top 40 on the American Billboard Hot 100 . But the single was a success in the dance charts. The single was more successful in the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan, where it reached the top ten of the charts. In the British charts, the single reached number 8. In the United Kingdom, the cover of the single showed a section of the music video for the song. It shows Madonna sitting on a chair in front of a white background and being held and tied up by her dancers. Madonna had dyed her hair black and was wearing a black tight full body latex leather outfit. In the United States, a picture by photographer Bettina Rheims served as the cover image instead. This came from a photoshoot with Madonna for the December 1994 issue of Details magazine .

Madonna sang the song for the second time in 2008 on her Sticky & Sweet tour . She played the song with an electric guitar, while a video was shown on a screen in the background, in which the American singer Britney Spears is trapped in an elevator. When the song appeared, Madonna sang the added line at the end of the song: "It's Britney, bitch" . Britney Spears made a guest appearance at a Madonna concert in Los Angeles on November 6, 2008 , when she sang the song with Madonna.

The music video was directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino (who previously directed the music videos for Open Your Heart and Justify My Love ) together with Madonna. Madonna's look and outfit symbolize the motto "latex and leather" in the music video, which should represent the "limitations of our society". For the music video, Madonna dyed her blonde hair black. The costume Madonna wears in the music video was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shortly after the recording .

The music video was recorded over two days on May 6th and May 7th, 1995 at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood , Los Angeles . Eric Stanton's comics served as inspiration for the music video. Madonna explained this in a "behind the scenes" interview while the music video was being shot. She said, "Mondino found this book by the illustrator named Stanton, who drew and dealt with S&M images, but we didn't want the full S&M, we only wanted it in moderation to have fun with it."
