Origin and reception
The song was written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard .
After the release on August 1, 1989, the single was placed in the US for the first time on August 19, 1989 in the "Hot Hundred", where it reached number 2, where the single was listed for two weeks, it stayed a total of 15 weeks "Hot Hundred". The single also took second place in the “Airplay Hit Parade” and the sales hit parade, while the single was first two weeks in a row in the “Adult Contemporary Charts”.
In Great Britain, the New Musical Express listed the single for the first time on September 16, 1989 as a newcomer at number 15. The highest ranking achieved the single, which remained in the top 50 for seven weeks, on September 30, 1989 at number 4.
The hit was able to achieve a chart placement in the top 20 of many countries and number 1 in Canada. In a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone , Madonna described the song as one of her less successful works.
Music video
The music video was shot in black and white on Paradise Cove Beach Malibu , California . In the action, Madonna sings the song on the beach. Herb Ritts directed the film .
