Medellin is the first single from Madonna's 14th album Madame X . It was released on April 17, 2019. The music video followed a week later on April 24, 2019. Madonna's duet partner is the Colombian reggaeton singer Maluma . Madonna performed with the song at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards .

Maluma and Madonna first met at the MTV Video Music Awards 2018 . The idea of ​​working together grew when both discovered that they were great horse lovers and shared their hobby.

In February 2019, they both appeared together in the studio on Instagram . Maluma confirmed the collaboration in an interview on Forbes.com and announced songs together. He described this as a big step for himself as well as Latin American music.

The cover of the single was made public by Madonna on April 15, 2019 via her social media channels. The song was finally released on April 17, 2019. It premiered on the Beats 1 radio station .

Music genre

The two performers wrote a Latin Pop style song together . The song is bilingual, with Madonna singing in both English and Spanish , but Maluma only in Spanish. The beats have a cha-cha-cha rhythm and differ from the predecessor songs, which are more like electro-pop . Lyrically the song is reflexive. Madonna, just turned 60 at the time the song was written, looks back at her seventeen year old and wonders where she would be today if she had taken a different path back then in Detroit.

A teaser for music video was released on April 17, 2019. A week later, the video premiered on MTV and MTV UK. Directed by Diana Kunst and Mau Morgó . The video shows the two artists together. Madonna starts the music video with a low whisper. She explains the concept behind Madame X and then gives the Cha-Cha-Cha. The song premiered live at the Billboard Music Awards on May 1, 2019. Joey Nolfi from Entertainment Weekly is also full of praise for the song, which would create a real summer feeling. Jem Asward from Variety was surprised by the singer's comeback, who would have expected an electro-pop-oriented dance track rather than a more sedate reggaeton rhythm. However, he criticized the use of the phrase "we built a cartel just for love" in a song about the hometown of drug lord Pablo Escobar . The Spanish lyrics reminded many reviewers of Madonna's hit La Isla Bonita .

For Maluma it was the first number one hit on this chart list. It reached number 18 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs , making it Madonna's biggest hit. However, the single never reached the Billboard Hot 100 . It reached the Top 100 in Switzerland and the UK . In the UK, Medellin was the first lead single on a Madonna album to miss the Top 40. In Italy, the single placed in the top 40 and sold 25,000 copies, for which it was awarded a gold record .
