The Musikexpress is a monthly German magazine that mainly deals with rock and pop music. In addition to detailed interviews and articles about important musicians from the rock , electro , hip-hop , pop and independent sectors, reviews of sound carriers, concert reports and articles about pop literature, pop art, films and DVDs are published. Each issue also comes with a CD accompanying the topics of the respective issue. The magazine also appears at irregular intervals with extras such as 7-inch vinyl singles, books, calendars and DVDs.

The magazine has been published by Axel Springer Mediahouse Berlin since the editorial team moved from Munich to Berlin in 2010 . The current editor-in-chief is Albert Koch . The authors and editors are Oliver Götz, Stephan Rehm, Jochen Overbeck and Josef Winkler .

history

On January 1st , 1956, the Musikexpress was founded as Muziek Expres in The Hague to promote concert events by the Dutch organizer Paul Acket. In the early 1960s, the program of the illegal radio station Radio Veronica was printed in the magazine , which led to an increase in circulation. In 1969 a German editorial office moved into offices in Cologne and since July 1969 has published an independent German-language version with issue number 163 at a price of 1.50 DM , which had developed from a German text sheet that had previously been attached to the Dutch print version. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary in 2019, a reprint of the German first edition was attached to the 09/19 issue. The Musikexpress has been published monthly in Germany since 1971.

In 1973 the editors of the Musikexpress in Hamburg merged with the Sounds magazine . Because of the decline in circulation of the Sounds, the magazines had to be sold to the Munich Marquard Media Group in 1982 . In January 1983 they were merged under the name Musikexpress / Sounds . The more traditional music and journalism understanding of the Musikexpress was expressed in the Musikexpress / Sounds . In 1984 Musikexpress / Sounds reached its highest edition to date with 181,327. In 1989 the last edition of the Dutch Muziek Expres appeared. In 2000, Axel Springer Verlag took over the magazine, along with other Marquard Medien publications, and founded the Axel Springer Mediahouse Munich GmbH for this purpose. With the September issue of the same year the nickname Sounds was dropped. In 2009 there was a drop in sales with a circulation of around 50,000 copies and a stable 8,000 subscribers, with kiosk sales falling by 48% within five years.

At the turn of the year 2009/2010, the Musikexpress, together with the other music titles from Axel Springer Verlag ( Rolling Stone and Metal Hammer ), moved to Berlin, where it was assigned to the Die Welt group.

Edition

The Musikexpress has lost a lot of its circulation in recent years . The sold circulation fell from 90,227 copies in the first quarter of 1998 to 51,836 copies in the fourth quarter of 2018. A decrease of 42.6 percent. Since then, the circulation figures are no longer reported to the IVW .

Videos of the so-called ME sessions , exclusive studio appearances by various bands and the style blog , which deals with general anomalies in pop culture, can be found on the Musikexpress website . In addition, there is an ME community with user reviews and a forum in which the editorial members also express themselves.

me.Style

Me.Style, the special fashion issue of the Musikexpress, has been published every six months since 2010. With a print run of 40,000 copies, the magazine shows the fashion highlights of the spring / summer and autumn / winter seasons. The title is aimed at women and men between the ages of 20 and 40 with a high level of interest in fashion, music and lifestyle. Since 2005, the Musikexpress has presented the Style Award every year, an award that has been given to media professionals and fashion labels who make the liaison between music and fashion clear.

Musikexpress Club

The Musikexpress club night Musikexpress.Klub (formerly pigs on Saturday ) takes place every second Friday of the month in the Berlin club Magnet . In autumn 2008 the party series was expanded to other cities such as Cologne, Hamburg and Salzburg.

me.Urban

On April 23, 2015, the Axel Springer Mediahouse is launching the latest Musikexpress offshoot ME.Urban for the first time . Under the slogan “We are the city”, a wide variety of aspects of urban life will be highlighted on 132 pages.

Media response

The Frankfurter Rundschau accused the Musikexpress of expressing itself indecisively since the mid-1970s at the latest, sometimes showing its affection for alternative and sometimes commercially successful artists. No plan was discernible, which was not a problem in the 1980s due to the lack of competition. In an article published in the book Journalismus als Eiertanz in 1999 it was assumed that the buyers of the Musikexpress consisted of those people “who are not at all interested in music.” ( Michael Rudolf : Strictly upside down. Munich journalism a la musikexpress / SOUNDS) The The new alignment of content and appearance with the April 2002 edition received skeptical comments in the Frankfurter Rundschau: “The new Musikexpress is rebellious. But only a little. ”( Adam Olschewski : Revolutiönchen. The Musikexpress packs old content in a new guise ) With the relaunch in March 2009, more fashion and scene-related topics as well as internet-related content are to be integrated into the magazine. There were optical changes towards clearer structures.

Trivia

When an article in Musikexpress / Sounds referred to Thomas Anders , the singer of Modern Talking , as “the sun-tanned singing fagot and lapdog on his wife Nora's gold chain”, Anders successfully sued the author Martin Brem for 25,000 DM in damages.

In the anniversary edition 09/19 (p. 34) the Love and Peace Festival was moved to the North Sea island of Fehmarn .

Album of the year

The readers of the Musikexpress have been voting for the album of the year since 1985. Since 1988 there has been a second list in which only the authors vote. In 1987, the albums of the year were released in no particular order, so there was no clear winner. The following albums have received awards so far:
