I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got is the second music album by Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor . It was released in March 1990 by their music label Chrysalis Records .
history
The critically acclaimed album contains their biggest hit Nothing Compares 2 U and became one of the world's best-selling albums of 1990. The album achieved number one placements in numerous countries, including the USA , Canada , Great Britain and Germany . The single Emperor's New Clothes , the successor to Nothing Compares 2 U , was only a moderate sales success, but reached the top of the American "Modern Rock Charts".
The album also contains O'Connor's own interpretation of I Am Stretched on Your Grave , a poem from the 17th century. Originally written in Gaelic (Irish) , the poem was translated into English by Philip King . The first song of the album, Feels So Different , begins with The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr .
O'Connor was inspired by the Kabbalah teacher Warren Kenton for the title song : "Special thanks to Selina Marshall + Warren Kenton for showing me that all I'd need was inside me."
reception
The album was nominated in four categories at the 1991 Grammy Awards and won the award for "Best Alternative Music Performance". O'Connor didn't accept her Grammy award.
In 2003, the album placed at number 406 on Rolling Stone 's list of the 500 best albums of all time .
To date, the album has sold over seven million times worldwide.
In 2009 Sinead O'Connor released a deluxe edition of the album with new titles and unreleased songs.
