geography

Sarare is located in the southeast of the state of Lara, not far from the state of Portuguesa . The village is located on a valley that separates the Andes and runs between Yaritagua in the north to Acarigua . The region is relatively mountainous and forms a continuation of the Venezuelan Andes. There are several fumaroles not far from Sarare . The most important is the so-called Volcán de Humo (Smoke Volcano).

Sarare is connected by a road with Barquisimeto in the north and Acarigua in the south.

history

Troops of the Welser expedition led by Georg Hohermuth von Speyer passed this region before 1538 on their way to Casanare. Andreas Gundelfinger and Sancho de Murga were stationed here with 9 knights and forty foot soldiers.

The village was founded in 1716 by the priest Pedro de Alcalá as an Indian mission on the banks of the Sarare River. The first inhabitants were 73 families of the Atures Indians. There were also Cherrecheres, Guamonteyes, Guamos, Colorados, Achaguas, Guáricos, Taparitas, Guayones, and Otomacos. A year after it was founded, the village was hit by an epidemic and depopulated.

In 1754, the priest Diego de Urbique founded the Mission of Saint Nicholas of Sarare.

Even in colonial times, the route along the Sarare River was an important trade route between the Llanos and the valleys of El Tocuyo and Barquisimeto.

Livestock farming suffered great damage in Venezuela during the Wars of Independence . The Federal War (1859–1864) was also very destructive for the region.

The dictator Juan Vicente Gómez bought one of the largest haciendas in the region, El Torrellero, in 1914 and turned it into one of the main livestock centers in the Venezuelan Llanos .
