Tasos Giannitsis

Anastasios "Tasos" Giannitsis ( Greek Τάσος Γιαννίτσης , * 1944 in Athens ) is a Greek economist. He was Greek Interior Minister from November 11, 2011 to May 17, 2012.

Giannitsis attended the German School of Athens and studied law and economics at the University of Athens and received his doctorate in economics from the Free University of Berlin (1969–1974). Since 1975 he has been Professor of Economics at the University of Athens.

He has written numerous articles in Greek and foreign magazines and publications on issues relating to the Greek economy, development, international investment, globalization , economics of technology, industrial and technological policy, the banking system, European integration, economic and monetary union .

Giannitsis advised various organizations and was a member and president of the boards of directors of banks and public institutions, chairman of the council of economic advisors in the Zolotas interim government (1989–90), member of the OECD Economic Committee (1993–2000) and economic advisor to Prime Minister Konstantinos Simitis von 1994 to 2000. In his cabinet he was Minister for Labor, Social Security (2000–2001), Deputy Foreign Minister (2001–2004) and, in spring 2004, Foreign Minister. He failed with the pension reform he had tackled. Giannitsis belongs to the social democratic PASOK .

Since December 2009, Giannitsis has been President of the Greek oil company Hellenic Petroleum SA.
