The album had the greatest success in Great Britain, where it got platinum status . However, the album also made it into the charts in continental Europe and the USA.

xx was largely positively rated by the critics:

Pitchfork Media gives the album a good rating with 8.7 out of 10 points. At Allmusic , the album receives four out of five points. In the review it says something like: “ [the] songs that are as simple as they are unique and mysterious. ”(German:“ [the] songs are as simple as they are unique and mysterious. ”) Laut.de also gave a rating of four out of five possible points and the conclusion:“ For the most part, it is a catchy and easily consumable debut "XX" recorded at night did not become.
