Don't Cry for Me Argentina is a song from the 1976 musical Evita . It was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and originally performed by Julie Covington .
history
Don't Cry for Me Argentina was released as a single in February 1977 and was a number one hit in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the Netherlands, among others . Due to the emotional impact of the song, Covington initially felt that the piece had no chance of becoming a success and recorded another version with a less emotional impact. However, Covington later decided to release the original version. The B-side of the single is Rainbow High .
Cover version of Madonna
In 1996 Madonna covered Don't Cry for Me Argentina for the soundtrack to the film Evita . In addition, a published Dance - Remix merely on the CD can be found. Madonna also performed the song on the Drowned World Tour . Alan Parker directed the music video ; Parts of the film Evita can be seen, among other things . Just like the original, Madonna's version became a number one hit, this time in Canada, France and Spain.
