Julie Covington (born September 11, 1947 in London ) is a former British singer and actress .

biography

Covington first studied at Homerton College , Cambridge . Her career began when she won a recording deal in 1967 after appearing on the David Frost television show .

In 1971, Covington's first commercially released album was released . A year later she made her debut as a stage actress in London and in 1976 she celebrated her international breakthrough with the lead role in the television series Rock Follies , together with her colleagues Rula Lenska and Charlotte Cornwell. The music for the series came from Roxy Music member Andy Mackay .

She was then invited by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to sing the title role in the original studio recording of their musical Evita . With the single Don't Cry for Me Argentina Covington landed an international number one hit . However, she didn't want to take part in the stage musical because she didn't like the role for political reasons.

Shortly afterwards, she had another top 10 hit in Great Britain as Rock Follies, together with the two aforementioned singers plus Sue Jones-Davies . In late 1977 she had another chart success with the song Only Women Bleed , a cover version of the Alice Cooper song .

Covington returned to the theater after releasing a second album in 1978 and some guest appearances on albums by other artists such as Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds . In 1982 she played the leading role in the British film about the Northern Ireland conflict In the Shadow of Memory , which won the Golden Bear at the 1983 Berlinale .
