Origin and content
The Look of Love was written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard . When Madonna needed songs for the soundtrack of Who's That Girl , then called Slammer , she turned to Stephen Bray and Leonard, with whom she wrote and produced her third studio album, True Blue , in 1986 .
She needed an up-tempo song and a down-tempo song. She came into the studio on a Thursday when Leonard was developing the chorus for the songs. He handed this tape over to Madonna, who went into the back room and finished the melody and lyrics of the songs while Leonard worked on the other parts. The uptempo song that was developed was Who's That Girl , the first single from the soundtrack, and the downtempo song that was developed and written the day after was The Look of Love .
“I had some very specific ideas in mind, music that would stand on its own and help and enhance what was going on on screen, and the only way to make that happen was to write the pieces yourself. [...] The songs aren't necessarily about Nikki [her character name in the movie] or written to be sung by someone like you, but there's a spirit in this music that captures both what the movie is about and what it is in the characters, I think. "
Madonna was inspired by the look actor James Stewart gave actress Grace Kelly in the 1954 film The Courtyard Window. Madonna said, “I can't describe it, but I want someone to look at me like that when they love me. It is the purest expression of love and adoration. Like devotion. It's shocking. "
