Rain is a pop song by Madonna . The song was released on October 11, 1992 as the fifth single and fourth in North America from their album Erotica .

Rain was written and produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone . The lyrics compare rain with the strengthening and cleansing effect of love, it can wash away pain. There are also - as with many other songs on Erotica - sexual meanings.

Rain ranked 7th in the UK , 14th in the US and 26th in Germany . The song was first used on Madonna's The Girlie Show World Tour in 1993. It was played as the fourth song at the concerts, immediately behind Vogue . A fragment of the Motown classic Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me) by The Temptations was used in the bridge of the song . Jon Pareles of the New York Times wrote: "On stage, the music isn't so resolutely contemporary. With a live band, directed by Jai Winding on keyboards, the music looks back to Motown (quoting" Just My Imagination "in" Rain "), girl groups and James Brown ".
