Anonymous Was A Woman is an American art award .

The Anonymous Was A Woman art prize has existed since 1996. It is given to women over 40 who are established in the art world and who are encouraged to continue their careers with the prize. Lauren Katzowitz Shenfield is the director of the program.

The award, which is endowed with $ 25,000, honors 10 female artists per year. A personal application is not intended. A changing group of renowned art historians , curators , writers and previous award winners nominates the artists.

The name says it all : Anonymous Was A Woman is derived from a line in the essay A room for itself by the British writer Virginia Woolf (1882–1941). The jury that selects the winners is anonymous. The funds are provided by anonymous philanthropists who have a connection with the UJA Federation of New York .
