La ciudad maldita is a spaghetti western from the final phase of the genre that has not been shown in Germany. The script is based on the novel Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett . Directed by Juan Bosch .
action
In the village of Personville, greed has become the dominant motive. Corruption and crime are the order of the day. Donald Wilson finds this condition unbearable and hires a detective agency to send help. Then OP arrives in the city; soon after, Wilson is found dead. His girlfriend Dinah now fears for her life, but OP manages to protect her and also to expose the grievances of the place. He can unmask Sheriff Noonan as the driving force behind the proceedings.
criticism
Ángel Comas described Hammett's attempted transfer to the West as a "bold undertaking".
Remarks
The identity of the main character acting under the name Chet Bacon is not clear; the opinion, widely spread in several sources, that it is Gianni Garko is wrong. Director Bosch called him a third-rate provincial actor who wanted to make it in film.
In Spain, just over 150,000 people saw the film in cinemas.
