The 2004 MTV Video Music Awards took place on August 29, 2004. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 10, 2003 to June 30, 2004. The award ceremony took place for the first time at the American Airlines Arena in Miami , Florida .

In contrast to earlier (and later) awards, there was no continuous moderator.

Most of the VMAs were won by Outkast and Jay-Z , who both got four VMAs each.
