D12 was an American hip-hop - Crew in 1996 by six Detroit rappers was founded. She has been under contract with Eminem's label Shady Records since 1999 and, thanks to its fame, achieved worldwide success from 2001. In 2018, Eminem announced the dissolution of the group.

history

The name "D12" is an abbreviation for Dirty Dozen ( German  dirty dozen ). Contrary to its name, D12 consisted of only six people, each with an alter ego . The founding members were Proof (Dirty Harry), Bizarre (Peter S. Bizarre), Kuniva (Hannz G.) (who later changed his name to Rondell Beene), Kon Artis (Mr. Porter), Bugz (Robert Beck) and Eminem , who used the famous character Slim Shady as his alter ego.

When the formation was not yet world famous, the member Bugz, who was known far beyond Detroit as a talented freestyle rapper, was shot on May 21, 1999 in Detroit after an argument. Bugz was replaced by the band's friend, rapper Swift , for whom he had spoken out as a possible member before his death. All members, including Eminem, have a tattoo on their wrists in memory of him. They also dedicated the songs Good Die Young and Bugz '97 to him on their second album D12 World .

In 2000, Eminem introduced the rap crew on his album The Marshall Mathers LP on the song Under the Influence . After the band was made known to such a large audience, the first D12 single Shit on You was released in late 2000 . In the summer of 2001 they released another single called Purple Pills , which could also be found on the debut album Devils Night , which was released shortly afterwards and which stayed in the German top ten for weeks . Then Fight Music was released as a single. In the same year they went on a tour of several weeks with Bionic Jive .

In April 2004 the second album D12 World followed , from which two more successful singles were released with My Band and How Come . This album also made it into the charts.

In 2005 D12 got a role in the feature film Game Without Rules , in the credits of which they were listed as "basketball convicts". For the film they recorded the song My Ballz . Although Eminem was the only D12 member who didn't appear in the film, he contributed the chorus and a verse to My Ballz .

On the morning of April 11, 2006, founding member Proof was shot dead after he and a second person left an after hours club on 8 Mile Road in Detroit. Then D12 consisted of only five rappers.

Since then, no other album has been released by the band. Instead, the remaining members released the mixtape Return of the Dozen in 2008 , on which other rappers from Detroit are represented, but not Eminem . The release of a second part of the mixtape took place on April 12, 2011. On April 6, 2011 Bizarre announced that Fuzz Scoota was accepted as the new sixth member of the group, but left in 2015.

In January 2014, Mark Bass of music producer duo Bass Brothers confirmed that D12 had recently recorded several songs at FBT Music Studios . Eminem should be heard on at least three songs. Also Bizarre returned to the group and confirmed in February 2014 that new material will be released soon yet.

Bizarre and Kuniva announced a new mixtape on August 22, 2015 via Twitter . It is called The Devils Night and was released in October 2015.

On August 31, 2018, Eminem announced the breakup of the group in the song Stepping Stone from his tenth studio album Kamikaze . He also apologized to Kuniva, Bizarre and Swift for neglecting the group after Proof's death.
