Devils Night ( named after a tradition in Detroit the night before Halloween ) is the first studio album by the Detroit rap crew D12 . It was released on June 5, 2001 as the first album on Eminem's newly founded label Shady Records .

Production and samples

Eminem acts as executive producer on the long player . He produced the beats for six songs ( Pistol Pistol , American Psycho , Purple Pills , Pimp Like Me , Girls , Words Are Weapons ) independently. The productions for Instigator , Blow My Buzz and Devils Night were made in collaboration with Jeff Bass as co-producer. In addition, Dr. Dre was responsible for the musical lining of the songs Nasty Mind , Ain't Nuttin 'But Music , Fight Music and Revelation . The D12 member Denaun Porter produced Shit Can Happen with Eminem as co-producer That's How ... . Furthermore, Eminem, Jeff Bass and DJ Head produced the beat for These Drugs and DJ Head with Eminem's help as co-producer Shit on You .

Only two songs on the album contain samples from pieces by other artists. So contains That's how elements of the song If There's A Hell Down Below by Curtis Mayfield , and Revelation part of was Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2 of Pink Floyd sampled.

Cover design

The album cover shows a burning black matchbox with the D12 logo on it. The background is black, and on the lower right edge of the screen is the word Devils Night .

Guest Posts

In addition to the members of D12, other artists or people can be heard on six tracks. The singer Truth Hurts appears on the song Nasty Mind , and the singer Dina Rae , as with Eminem's solo albums, has an appearance on track 13 ( Pimp Like Me ). The rapper and producer Dr. Dre can be heard on the chorus of Ain't Nuttin 'But Music , but is not included in the booklet. The Shady Records -member Obie Trice raps the same skit a few lines. You can also hear producer Jeff Bass and Steve Berman on other skits.

RapReviews

Devils Night received mostly average ratings from critics. The site Metacritic calculated from eleven reviews of English-language media an average of 58%.

  • laut.de gave Devils Night four out of a possible five points. It is highlighted that Eminem clearly stands out from the other crew members:

You can hear Mr. Mathers in every second hook, as expected, and with his Skillz he raps the other D-12 members Kon Artis, Proof, Swift, Kuniva and Bizarre on the wall, but there is no too big a crack between them Superstar and his unknown colleague. Because they try to counter it with their flows and sometimes funny ideas. [...] In general, D-12 consistently continue the lyrical line of the two Eminem albums, which is mostly oozing with irony. [...] With the beats, however, no gimmicks are to be expected, it's very serious and straight to the point. "

  • The taz website presents the album as provocative:

" With" Devil's Night "the" dirty dozen "from the Autostadt Detroit recorded a completely exaggerated gangster rap opus bursting with black humor. Even if "Devil's Night" is less self-reflective than Eminem's solo albums, one thing becomes immediately clear with D12: The "bad boy" image is calculated from the start. [...] Musically, D12, with the active help of Dr. Dre left the classic hip-hop scheme long ago. While they do rock crossovers (including a guitar solo) on songs like the aforementioned "Revelation", they integrate elements like harmonica (on the drug anthem "Purple Pills") and falsetto vocals on the rest of the album. "
