Caterpillar ( English for " caterpillar ") is a song by the US rapper Royce da 5'9 ″ , which he recorded with rappers King Green and Eminem . The song is the fourth single from his seventh studio album Book of Ryan and was released on May 3, 2018.

In Caterpillar numerous modern rapper denounces that reach the top of the charts and all as the number one see. Royce da 5'9 ″ criticizes them because they should not forget who were the pioneers in rap, to whom they owe their current success and that it could quickly pass. He uses the metaphor of the development from a caterpillar to a butterfly , with his generation representing the caterpillar and the modern rappers being embodied by the butterfly. The music video for Caterpillar was directed by James Larese (of Syndrome ). It premiered on May 3, 2018 and has over 50 million views on YouTube (as of August 2020).

The video is mostly in black and white , with isolated red elements. Royce da 5'9 ″ wears a white jacket from the Detroit Pistons basketball team and raps his verses into the camera, while numerous drawings, animations and parts of the text can be seen in the picture. Meanwhile, Eminem stands motionless next to him. Then Eminem raps his verse, also accompanied by drawings, animations and parts of the text, while Royce now stands motionless next to him.

Chart successes

Caterpillar reached number 13 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart in the United States, narrowly missing the top 100 there. In other countries it could not place in the charts.
