Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band.
history
Early phase (1993–1996)
Modest Mouse was founded in 1993 in Issaquah , Washington by Isaac Brock ( vocals , guitar ), Jeremiah Green ( drums ), and John Wickart ( bass ) in a video store. The name " Modest Mouse " is derived from a book Brock had read in which the members of the lower middle class were referred to as "modest, mouse-like people". Modest Mouse did not want their music to be qualified from the start and they could never be compared with other bands. Modest Mouse's sound is most likely towards Pixies , Meat Puppets , Pavement and Sonic Youth . In the early stages of the band, guitarist Dann Gallucci joined the band, but he soon left and switched to the band " Murder City Devils ". After many test recordings and demos, the band recorded their debut EP in Calvin Johnson's "Dub Narcotic Studios" in 1994. It was released on Johnson's " K Records " label entitled Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect? The first single followed in 1996 with "Broke".
The Label Fight (1996-2004)
Due to the increasing popularity of the band, a small battle between the labels and record companies for the band Modest Mouse developed over time .
The band then switched to the Up Records label , on which they released This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About and the EP Interstate 8 in 1996 . At first glance, this sound looks confused and is not easy to assign. At this point the bassist has already changed. Eric Judy replaced John Wickart. A year later, the friends take The Fruit That Ate Itself back on the K label . However, the breakthrough came in the same year with The Lonesome Crowded West on Up Records . Bigger labels are discovering the band for themselves, although Modest Mouse claims that the music is more important than their fame. The band later signed with the Sony sub-label Epic Records . This is followed by the 1999 Night On The Sun EP from the Rebel Beat Factory label . In 2000, Up Records released the compilation Building Nothing Out Of Something with singles, B-sides and rarities. However, this record has its own competition from the new album The Moon & Antarctica , the first on the major label Epic Records . Also in 2000 there was a re-release of the EP Night On The Sun , but by Up Records with a different tracklist. In 2001 the Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks EP (Epic) was released, as well as the Sad Sappy Sucker compilation from the almost forgotten K label , which contains all the tapes and demos recorded in 1994 for fans.
Until 2004, the musicians mainly deal with side projects. Brock brings out Sharpen Your Teeth with Ugly Casanova in 2002 .
Breakthrough (since 2004)
In 2004 the album Good News For People Who Love Bad News (Epic) was released. The loss of drummer Jeremiah Green, who will be replaced by Benjamin Weikel, and new entry Dann Gallucci (guitar) have a strong influence on the new album. The sound is more in the original direction of Modest Mouse . The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is also on the record, and Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne remixed The Good Times Are Killing Me . Modest Mouse consciously forego many effects and work with tried and tested rock instruments. Fans applaud the new line up and the simplicity of the album. In 2004 MTV nominated the band for three categories at the Music Awards. The video for the single Float On is nominated for Best Special Effects In A Video , Breakthrough Video and MTV 2 Awards . At the same time the new version of the 2000 album The Moon And Antarctica will be released , which features 4 exclusive tracks from the “BBC Radio 1 Session Versions”. The cover and CD have been adapted to the Good News For People Who Love Bad News color philosophy. At the Good News everything is green / pink, while the Moon has a light blue / orange design.
In the same year, Jeremiah Green returned to Modest Mouse , his replacement Benjamin Weikel returned to his band The Helio Sequence . The reasons for Green's temporary exit are unclear, but presumably due to drug problems. During the recording of the new album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank , which will be released in early 2007, Johnny Marr , the former guitarist of The Smiths , joined the band. The album, released on March 20th , reached number 1 on the Billboard charts on April 7th . The single Dashboard came to number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100. The current studio album Strangers To Ourselves was released in March 2015.
In Germany, the latest records by Modest Mouse appear on the Red Ink platform, which belongs to Sony BMG, and are distributed by Rough Trade .
