MTV Video Music Awards / Best Hip-Hop Video
The MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video was first presented in 1999 as part of the MTV Video Music Awards . Despite the name, these are not necessarily videos that are exclusively hip-hop , as this category was initially covered by the Best Rap Video category . MTV defined hip-hop as music that also contained R&B elements, while the rap category was intended solely for contributions to the rap genre. So there were always nominations for contributions that were actually unrelated to the genre. At the MTV Video Music Awards 2007 the category was suspended because they wanted to create a new concept for the award ceremony, but it failed. Therefore, the award was given again in 2008, but the rap category was then dispensed with, so that pure rap contributions fell under this category again.
Nicki Minaj and Drake top the list of winners with three awards each, while Kanye West tops the list of nominations with nine. The first winner was the Beastie Boys .
