I'm Real (English for: " I'm real ") is the title of two songs by the American singer Jennifer Lopez . One appeared on her second music album J.Lo (2001) and the other song I'm Real (Murder Remix) , in collaboration with American rapper Ja Rule , appeared on Lopez 'remix album J to tha LO !: The Remixes (2002) as well on Ja Rule's third album Pain Is Love (2001). I'm Real (Murder Remix) reached number one on the American Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks on September 8, 2001 . After the small success of the single Play , J.Lo wanted to work with Ja Rule on the song I'm Real , so that the song would be more successful in the charts. Ashanti is the backing singer for the Murder Remix. Both songs are different songs with the same title.

The music video for I'm Real's Murder Remix also shows Ja Rule and Irv Gotti . Jennifer Lopez sang the song at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards and won the Best Hip-Hop Video award at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards .

controversy

In addition to the success of I'm Real , there was also controversy, for example about the sample and the structure of the song. The song includes a sample of Yellow Magic Orchestra's 1978 hit Firecracker , and the remix version samples Mary Jane Girls '1983 hit All Night Long and borrows the melody from Rick James ' Mary Jane . There were also rumors that the Firecracker sample was originally intended for Mariah Carey's number two hit Loverboy . According to a musician from Firecracker , Carey asked for a license to use the sample of the song, months earlier J. Lopez did the same. Carey had the thought that her former husband and head of Sony Music ( Columbia Records ), Tommy Mottola, was interested in stifling Carey's career by personally presenting the sample to Jennifer Lopez.

Because of Lopez and her ex-husband, Carey referenced the song in her single Loverboy , her first single that she released on her new record company Virgin Records . The lines can be heard in Da Brats Rapvers, where Carey sings: "Hate on me, much as you want to, you can't do what the fuck I do, bitches be, emulating me daily" over the melody of Firecracker . The word "bitch" was used in the song, but when the song played on the radio the word was deleted.

Irv Gotti, who wrote the remix version of I'm Real feat. Produced by Ja Rule, announced in an interview with XXL magazine that Mottola had contacted him and asked to produce a song that sounds exactly like a song from Mariah Carey's album Glitter , called If We , which also Yes Rule participates as a guest rapper.

Furthermore, critics and the African American population criticized that Lopez sings the word nigga in the Murder Remix .

Commercial win

I'm Real debuted in the US on July 7, 2001 at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Due to the heavy radio use, the song reached the top 20 after its fourth week. On September 8, 2001, the song reached number one in the United States, replacing Alicia Keys Fallin ' from the top. I'm Real spent the next three weeks in first place. After that, Keys Fallin ' reached number one again for three weeks, during which time I'm Real spent three weeks in second place and then another two weeks in first place. I'm Real (Murder Remix) was played very often by contemporary R&B / Hip Hop and Pop radio in the summer and winter of 2001. In total, the song spent 15 weeks in the American top five. In 2009, the song was named the 30th most successful single of the 2000s by Billboard.

Lopez's follow-up single Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix) , also a collaboration with Ja Rule, reached number one in the US in 2002 for six weeks.
