On the 6 (English for ". In the 6 ") is the debut album of American pop - R & B - singer Jennifer Lopez . It was released on June 1, 1999 in the United States by the music label Epic Records .
background
The album's name refers to line 6 of the New York City subway where Lopez worked as a waitress before starting her career. The album was supposed to be called Feelin 'So Good , but Lopez decided on On the 6 . Instead, Feelin 'So Good was released as the third single. The album contains two Diana Ross - cover versions : Promise Me You'll Try and bonus song Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) . This album is more pop-oriented than their later albums.

On the 6 debuted at eighth place on the US Billboard 200 in the week ending June 19, 1999, with over 11,000 CD units sold in the first week of sales. The album stayed in the US album charts for 63 weeks, including twenty weeks in the top ten. It sold over five million copies worldwide and released five singles , including the number one hit and breakthrough If You Had My Love , which held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in 1999 . It is Jennifer Lopez's most successful single to date. The second single Waiting for Tonight was also successful .
