J.Lo is the second studio album by the American singer Jennifer Lopez . The album was released on January 16, 2001 by Epic Records . As of 2013, it was sold over 3.8 million times in the United States alone.

History of origin

In April 2000 it was announced that Jennifer Lopez, who had just completed the film Wedding Planner , would start work on the follow-up to her debut album On the 6 after another film called Angel Eyes (2001) . The album was originally announced as My Passionate Journey . In August 2000 the album was already half finished. Sean Combs , Lopez's partner at the time, who was the co-producer of the first album, would also contribute to the new album. Rodney Jerkins, producer of If You Had My Love from the debut album, was there again.

The album was announced for November 2000, the first single should be released in late September. But Lopez made other films and couldn't start recording until August, so she exceeded the deadline. Lopez then decided to name the album J.Lo to reflect her increased creative control over her musical career. At the same time, she felt a lot more mature as an artist than she did on her debut. J.Lo is a nickname she got from her fans. She wanted to pay homage to them and thank them for their support. Artists like Janet Jackson ( Damita Joe , 2004) and Mariah Carey ( The Emancipation of Mimi , 2005) adapted this idea.

Before the album was released, Jennifer Lopez changed her image. She colored her hair and changed her stage name to J.Lo. In addition, she now marketed herself more as a sex symbol. Before she had made a point of being a role model for young people, now she liked this new role. The album was finally released on January 16, 2001.

Music style and lyrics

J.Lo is a pop album with Latin pop and contemporary R&B influences. The tracks are more personal in nature than on their first album and deal with romantic themes. They are based on Lopez's specific environment.

The opening title of the album is Love Don't Cost a Thing . The song was produced by Ric Wake and deals with materialistic relationships. I'm Real was composed by Lopez and Cory Rooney. The song was produced by Troy Oliver. Play is a dance-pop track produced by Swedish producers Arnthor Birgisson and Anders Bagge. As a background singer looked Christina Milian with. Ain't It Funny is a Latin pop song written by Lopez and Rooney.

The album also contains Spanish songs: Cariño , Si Ya Se Acabo and Dame (Touch Me) . Cariño is about the desire for love and affection. It is a cha-cha-cha variation.

The album rerelease contains a remix of I'm Real entitled I'm Real (Murder Remix) . On this is Ja Rule ( Murder, Inc. ) to hear. This gives the song a more R&B-heavy sound.

controversy

Both the original and the remix of I'm Real were part of a controversy. The original version is based on a sample of Yellow Magic Orchestra's song Firecracker and uses this for the intro and chorus. Tommy Mottola was the boss of both Sony Records and Columbia Records, as well as the ex-husband of Mariah Carey . According to Irv Gotti , he had heard the sample in a trailer for the film Glitter - Shine of a Star and, although he knew Carey's version, had the sample used. In fact, Carey had previously registered the sample and Lopez did not file claims until a month later. In the wake of this controversy, Carey had to withdraw the song. Gotti later also said Mottola had instructed him to copy a track from the Glitter album , which he produced before Carey split. The song If We featured guest contributions by Ja Rule and Nate Dogg .

The remix, however, came under fire for its use of the word " nigga ". Lopez said she was not racist and the text was written by Ja Rule. Ja Rule did not understand the discussion because Lopez was not the first Latina to use the word in a song and that has never led to such a discussion before.

promotion

The CD contained a CD-ROM part that gave access to a special part of Jennifer Lopez's official website. On January 12, 2001, Lopez appeared on Top of the Pops and played two songs from the album. She was at the Virgin Megastore on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles at noon on January 24th . Not only could fans buy the album, they also received an autograph.

On February 10th, Jennifer Lopez hosted and performed on Saturday Night Live . She was also a guest on various American TV shows such as Live with Regis , 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , Late Show with David Letterman and Today, as well as at the 2001 Grammy Awards . In February, she introduced Love Don't Cost a Thing and Play at a Total Request Live special as part of " CBS Sports ' presents MTV's TRL The Super Bowl Sunday ". At the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards on September 6, she appeared with Love Don't Cost a Thing and I'm Real (Murder Remix) . Ja Rule was added to the latter.

From September 22nd to 23rd, Jennifer Lopez gave two concerts in Puerto Rico. These concerts appeared on the Let's Get Loud DVD . The DVD was awarded a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America.
