album Rebirth

Get Right is the first single from Jennifer Lopez 's fourth studio album, Rebirth (2005). The single was released on January 4, 2005 and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The song became a worldwide hit, including in the UK , where it became Lopez's second number one hit after Love Don't Cost a Thing in 2001.

background

After the last studio album This Is Me ... Then and the failed relationship with Ben Affleck and the whole media circus around it, Jennifer Lopez took a long break. During this time she married Marc Anthony . Only when she felt ready again did she work on her fourth album, Rebirth.

Rich Harrison originally wrote the song with Usher for his fourth studio album, Confessions (2004). Back then , it was written under the title Ride , but the song didn't make it onto the album because Usher decided to use Take Your Hand and he couldn't get the song right. However, the song was made available to the public as a 12 '' promo and as an Internet download. Usher was therefore not exactly happy with the choice of the first single for Jennifer Lopez 'album Rebirth , especially since The Ride has now become a popular song. Rich Harrison decided to rework the song for Lopez after initially earning 1 Thing for Lopez , but Amerie leaked the track she had previously recorded and was not supposed to be released .

The beat stayed the same in comparison, but the lyrics were changed to better match Jennifer Lopez. However, Lopez used the bridge from the Usher song. When this became known. The DJs in the clubs and on the radio made fun of playing the two versions one after the other.

Rich Harrison co-produced the song with Cory Rooney . It was the opening track of the album Rebirth, but was released on January 4, 2005, the album followed on February 23. In addition to the original version, the album also contains another version with gastrapper Fabolous . The first live performance was on January 22nd, 2005 at the NRJ Awards during Midem in Cannes .

Music style and text

Get Right has is upbeat - Dance - and R & B -Song with influences from jazz and funk . The hook is based on a sample from Maceo and the Macks song Soul Power '74 , which in turn was a remix of the James Brown song Soul Power . Therefore James Brown received a songwriting credit. A saxophone melody is played over the entire track.

The text is an invitation to a potential dance partner and works with temptations such as dance, sex and alcohol. On the remix with Fabolous he makes it clear that he is not “Mr. Right ”, but rather“ Mr. Right now".

Music video

The music video was directed by Francis Lawrence , who previously shot videos for Lopez's singles Waiting for Tonight and Play . The concept of the video was to do some kind of dance version of Robert Altman's film Short Cuts (1993). It should combine all the moments that could happen in a club during a single track. Lopez plays different characters in a nightclub: a DJ (the main character), a go-go dancer who dances at the bar, a bartender , a nerdy , a shy girl, a superstar, and other personalities who come to the club. The characters are introduced at the beginning of the video. The “wife” sympathizes with a friend, they talk about work and drink vodka . The dancer is dancing on the bar and entertaining the audience. The superstar is admired and photographed. The superstar helps the shy girl who overcomes her shyness and is now dancing next to the go-go dancer on the bar. This encourages everyone to dance and Lopez takes on the role of DJ.

The video was nominated four times at the MTV Video Music Awards 2005 : Best Dance Video , Best Direction , Best Choreography and Best Editing , but it won no award.

parody

In a sequence of The Ellen DeGeneres Show , which was sent on 16 May 2005, has Ellen DeGeneres Lopez as a guest. Before Lopez arrives, the moderator says: “ The only way to describe my next guest is as my dancing partner, check it out ... ” A video that was recorded during the shooting is then shown. The director yells “Action!” And Lopez dances with the dancers while Ellen DeGeneres gives tips on dancing and falls over her own feet.
