The Carters (stylized as THE CARTERS ) is an American R&B / hip-hop duo consisting of the married couple Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) . After numerous collaborations and two tours, the duo released Everything Is Love , an album under this name for the first time in 2018 .
prehistory
Beyoncé and Jay-Z met around 2000 when she was part of the girl group Destiny's Child , but didn't start dating until a year later. The relationship only became public when the two attended the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards together . In April 2008, they were married on a small scale in Jay-Z's penthouse and Beyoncé adopted the real name of her husband Carter as part of a double name. The first daughter Blue Ivy was born in 2012, the twins Sir and Rumi Carter were born in 2017.
The singer and the rapper's first musical collaboration came on the single '03 Bonnie & Clyde , which was released in October 2002 and reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 . The following year, the two collaborated on the two-time Grammy- winning Beyoncé single Crazy in Love , which became a classic over the years. Further collaborations followed in 2006 with Beyoncé's Déjà Vu and Jay-Z's Hollywood, among others . The 2013 single Drunk in Love can be read as a sequel to Crazy in Love . In 2014 the musician couple went on tour together through North America and France for the first time . With Beyoncé's sixth studio album Lemonade , rumors arose in 2016 that her husband might have cheated on her. On songs like Pray You Catch Me , Don't Hurt Yourself and All Night , she worked on the relationship with Jay-Z. A year later he responded to the allegations of infidelity and disrespect with his album 4:44 , on which he publicly asked his wife for forgiveness ("I apologize, our love was one for the ages and I contained us") and his deep regret ("And if my children knew, I don't even know what I would do / If they ain't look at me the same / I would prolly die with all the shame").
The Carters
Instead of separating, the couple deepened their artistic collaboration and announced a second joint tour ( On the Run Tour II ) through Europe and North America for spring 2018 . On June 16 - at the end of their fifth concert in London - the music video for Apeshit, recorded in the Louvre in Paris , premiered. At the same time, a collaboration album was announced, which is now available via the Tidal streaming service . The Carters' first joint album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and became a commercial and critical success. The LP includes guest appearances by Cool & Dre , Offset , Pharrell Williams , Quavo and Ty Dolla Sign and represents the unofficial conclusion of a trilogy that began with the solo albums Lemonade and 4:44 . Thus, on Everything Is Love, the family relationships of the previous works are taken up again and processed with the sense of a process of healing. In addition to feminist and anti-racist points of view, the social background and the couple's wealth are referenced again and again.
At the end of December 2018, ex-President Barack Obama listed Apeshit as one of his favorite titles of the year. In addition to numerous other awards, including for the music video for Apeshit , The Carters were nominated for three Grammy Awards and won one of them in the " Best Urban Contemporary Album " category .
