The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place on August 26, 2019 at the Prudential Center in Newark . It was the first to be presented in New Jersey. Sebastian Maniscalco hosted the 36th award ceremony .

The nominations were announced on July 23, 2019. Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande received most of them with ten each. Other top artists were Billie Eilish with nine and Lil Nas X with eight nominations.

For the first time since 2006 a Moonman was awarded for Best R&B Video . Best K-Pop and Video for Good were added to the new categories .
