Sucker is the first single from the fifth studio album Happiness Begins by the Jonas Brothers . It marks the beginning of their comeback in 2019 and was released before the album on March 1, 2019, six years after their last single First Time in 2013. The single topped the charts for the first time for the Jonas Brothers North American states and others worldwide. Special attention was paid to the appearance of the brothers' famous partners - Danielle Jonas, Priyanka Chopra and Sophie Turner - in the accompanying music video, which was recognized at the MTV Video Music Awards 2019 .

Emergence

In July 2018, while working on the documentary Chasing Happiness, the band reunited under the Republic Records label . Meanwhile, A & R -Managerin Wendy Goldstein contacted to a new and improved sound for the band to find the music producer and songwriter Ryan Tedder , Greg Kurstin and Justin Tranter. While looking for the first single for the album, Tedder remembered the song Sucker , which he had written with Louis Bell and Frank Dukes. Bell said, “Wouldn't it be great if the Jonas Brothers came back? That would be a hit. ”When the song was played to Max Martin , he said after just 20 seconds:“ Are you kidding me? Holy shit!"

The comeback and the single were almost not advertised in advance. Only on February 28, one day before the release on March 1, did they announce the single on their social media channels, which they had previously colored black, by publishing the cover image including the title and revealing that it would be published at midnight. The music video was released at the same time as the single. Monte Lipman, founder of Republic Records, attributes much of the single's success to this surprise effect: "Nobody was given the opportunity to anticipate the comeback and to draw any conclusions about it."

Promotion and live performances

To promote the comeback and the single, the Jonas Brothers appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden for a week from March 4th and took part in various segments, including Carpool Karaoke. James Corden released a clip of this segment on February 28 as a trailer for Jonas Brothers Week with an excerpt of the four of them singing sucker . On March 7, they played the song live on television for the first time on the show.
Further appearances followed in May at the Billboard Music Awards and on Saturday Night Live. With this song they were also the first musical guests at the All That revival on June 15.

On May 30th, they performed with Sucker in the Live Lounge of BBC Radio 1 and also played a cover of Lewis Capaldi's Someone You Loved . The singer Halsey performed Sucker in the Live Lounge on June 6th in a slower, jazzy acoustic version, which received praise from the Jonas Brothers on Twitter.

style

Sucker is a pop funk song held in a minor key. The rock elements typical of the band in the past have been scaled back, as has the few instruments used, which puts more focus on the vocals. Nick dominates this in the verse and the chorus, for example with falsetto interludes. Joe carries the pre-chorus and both harmonize in the hookline . In addition, the arrangement of the song contains details such as clapping, whistling and a bass riff .

Title and content

Sucker , which often means idiot or something similar, is used in the song in the repeatedly repeated verse "I'm a sucker for you" (German: "I have a weakness for you"), with which the ego conveys to fall for a person to be because she likes and desires it so much that she cannot resist it. The I follows you everywhere, even through the darkness, and says they go better together than "birds of a feather". This phrase comes from the proverb "Birds of a feather flock together" (literally, "Birds of one kind flock together", in German roughly synonymous with "Equal and equal like to join.") And describes people of the same type. In addition to the romantic mood of such pictures, there are also somewhat darker undertones in the problematic or eccentric behavior of the beloved, which is overlooked by the feelings.
In the real context, the three brothers use the song to express their attraction and infatuation for their companions. The verse “I'm feeling heat in December” is understood as specifically related to Nick's wedding with Priyanka Chopra on December 1, 2018.

The music video was shot by Anthony Mandler and produced by Richard Fenton and was released on March 1st at the same time as the single. A Director's Cut was released on March 5th and a “Behind the Scenes” video on March 26th. The video was shot on a weekend in mid-February.
In addition to the three brothers, their partners can be seen in it: Kevin's wife Danielle Jonas, Nick's wife Priyanka Chopra , Joe's then fiancée Sophie Turner (married since May 2019). These were designed by several international fashion designers such as Giambattista Valli and Tomo Koizumi. The three couples are on the property, building and garden of Hatfield House , where Elizabeth I grew up, and the band plays in front of her portrait in the marble hall. A reference to the current British Queen Elizabeth II is that Danielle takes her favorite dog breed , corgis, for a walk. Scenes such as a tea party in the garden and a dinner in the building, as well as white rabbits are reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and The Favorite. At the end of the video, the three couples pose in the library for a royal painting.

The music video reached over 45 million clicks in the first week and has been clicked over 200 million times to date (as of September 7, 2019).

The single is rated very positively and as a solid start for a successful comeback of the now matured band. They represent the "successful transition from a 2000 boy band to a grown-up male band," by replacing teenage infatuation with mature sexuality and no longer making fans rave about their own single status, but showing them "how healthy, happy and loving relationships look like and how they can strive for them. ”So the song is more reminiscent of a connection between Nick and Joe's musical activities outside the band in the last few years than the earlier style of the band 10 years ago. Musically it is also praised and highlighted as a catchy catchy tune.

Allegation of similarity

Fans of the band Portugal. The Man approached them on social media about Sucker's similarities to their song Feel It Still . The band wrote in their replies that she was not angry, and showed himself to the similarity of Feel It Still to the song Please Mister Postman of the Marvelettes out. Further awards

At the MTV Video Music Awards 2019 , the music video for Sucker was nominated in several categories and named Best Pop Video , which brought the Jonas Brothers their first MTV VMA Award.
