Prabal Gurung (born March 31, 1979 in Singapore ) (nepal. प्रबल गुरुङ) is a Nepalese-American fashion designer.

Fashion

Gurung started his own label in 2009. Before that, he worked for Cynthia Rowley and Bill Blass . He did an internship with Donna Karan while studying The New School for Design at Parsons . His first exhibition was at New York Fashion Week . In 2010 the New York Times named him, together with other designers of Asian origin such as Alexander Wang , Philipp Lim and Jason Wu, as the future of fashion .

In 2013 Gurung designed a collection under his name for the American department store chain Target . Well-known wearers of his clothes are Michelle Obama and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge . Other well-known stars who had Gurung outfitted for appearances on the red carpet are Maggie Q , Elettra Wiedemann and Emma Watson .

Life

Gurung was born in Singapore to Nepalese parents and grew up in Kathmandu , Nepal . He studied at the Indian National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi , where he designed his first commercially available clothes for the Indian label Manish Arora .

After Gurung came to the United States in New York City in 1999 , he received American citizenship in 2013.
