Blackpink ( Korean 블랙 핑크 , stylized spelling : BLACKPINK or BLΛƆKPIИK ) is a South Korean girl group that was founded by YG Entertainment in 2016 . It consists of the members Jisoo , Jennie , Rosé and Lisa .

history

Before the official debut

The creation of Blackpink has been associated with some delays and changes. In 2011, Yang Hyun-suk announced that he would like to create a girl group based on the model of Girls' Generation . The group should be pretty and able to sing, but talent should outweigh looks.

The formation of the girl group was inconsistent. Planned names for the new girl group were "Pink Punk", "Baby Monster" and "Magnum". The candidates for the group were the trainees Jennie Kim, Kim Jisoo, Lalisa Manoban, Park Chaeyoung, Cho Miyeon, Kim Eunbi, Euna Kim, Jinny Park, Jang Hanna and Moon Sua. However, the plans failed because some of the candidates left the group for various reasons. Correspondingly, the number of girls in the group decreased after years of training. Pink Punk became Blackpink and official preparations for Blackpink's debut began in August 2016 with teasers.

2016: Debut and first musical successes

On June 29, 2016, the group was officially introduced by YG Entertainment. After 7 years you are the first YGE girl group after 2NE1 . Their first single, Square One , was released on August 8, 2016. The songs for the single, Whistle and Boombayah, were written and produced by Teddy Park and reached number one and two on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. So far, this has only been achieved by Psy and Big Bang . The single Whistle debuted at number 1 on the Gaon charts in August 2016 . The band also achieved success on China 's largest music service QQ Music .

On August 14th the quartet had their first appearance in the music program Inkigayo by SBS . On August 27th and September 11th they won at Inkigayo and at 13 days they are the girl group that won a music program in a very short time after their debut.

On November 1, 2016, their second single Square Two with the lead singles Playing with Fire and Stay was released . The songs were produced by Teddy Park, R.Tee, and Seo Won Jin. With Playing with Fire they again reached first place on the Billboard World Digital Songs Charts. In South Korea, Playing With Fire reached number three and Stay number ten.

Black Pink won several newcomer awards in major Korean music award shows within the first five months. Billboard also named Black Pink "one of the best new K-pop groups of 2016".

2017: As If It's Your Last and debut in Japan

In January 2017, it was announced on the official Instagram account that their fans were called BLINK . In the summer of 2017, Black Pink announced appearances in Japan and the release of an EP on August 8th.

On June 22nd, the single As If It's Your Last was released , in which the music styles house , reggae and Moombahton are mixed. The video was viewed more than 10 million times after 17 hours. More than 100 million views were counted within 46 days, making it the most viewed video by a Korean girl group. It reached number one on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart after one day.

On July 20, 2017, Black Pink held their first concert at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo in front of 14,000 visitors. However, there was a ticket demand of 200,000 people. On August 30, 2017, their first EP Blackpink was released in Japan.

2018: Blackpink House and Square Up

An episode of Blackpink House has been published on YouTube , Naver and V Live every Saturday at 9 a.m. KST since January 6, 2018 , and also broadcast on JTBC 2 and Olleh TV. A total of twelve episodes appeared.

On March 28th, Blackpink released a re-release of their EP Blackpink , called Re: BLACKPINK , which includes their previous songs in Japanese and Korean. It also contains their music videos, recordings of their live performances and a special interview.

On May 28, the group put their first official glow stick up for sale. The glow stick in the shape of a hammer has two pink hearts made of silicone on both sides of a black handle. It was designed by the members themselves. If you press a button, both hearts light up continuously. If you press the button again, the reaction light function is activated and the light stick lights up, reacting to the bass in the environment. In addition, the stick can make a squeaking sound as soon as this function is activated and you hit something with the hammer.

On June 15th, Black Pink released their first mini-album called Square Up . The mini-album contains the single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du and the songs Forever Young , Really and See U Later . The single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du charted at number 17 on the Official Single Trending Charts and at number 78 on the UK's official singles charts . This makes them the first Korean girl group whose single charted in the UK. The video for Ddu-Du Ddu-Du achieved 300 million views on Youtube after 69 days as the fastest video by a Korean group. Furthermore, it achieved 36.2 million views within 24 hours as the third fastest music video on the video portal. Also, Ddu-Du Ddu-Du debuted at number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Square Up at number 40 on the Billboard 200 , which are the highest chart positions for a Korean girl group in the United States . The EP sold over 170,000 copies in the month of release in South Korea.

Their first tour called the Blackpink Arena Tour 2018 started on July 24th in Osaka , Japan and ended on December 24th.

On July 26th, the YouTube group channel reached 10 million subscribers and was the first channel in a K-Pop group to be awarded a Diamond Play Button .

On November 10th and 11th, the group held their first concert in Korea called the Blackpink [In your area] Seoul Concert . The concert was completely sold out just 2 to 3 minutes after sales opened. The number of visitors for both days was 15,000.

On October 19, Dua Lipa released the song Kiss and Make Up with Black Pink.

2019: Kill This Love

In April Blackpink released their second EP Kill this Love with the single of the same name and the other tracks, Don't know what to do , Kick it, Hope not and a remix of their song Ddu-du Ddu-du .

Ddu-du Ddu-du's music video also hit 1 billion views that year. That makes Blackpink the first K-pop group to get 1 billion views. On October 16, the Japanese version of Kill This Love was also released.

Blackpink's world tour Blackpink in your area also took place.

2020: Sour Candy and How You Like That

With Sour Candy, Lady Gaga released the third single from their new album Chromatica on May 28, 2020 in collaboration with Blackpink .

On June 26th they started their comeback with the pre-release single How You Like That as a premiere on Youtube. Within 24 hours, the video on the platform had 82.4 million views. With that, the girl group broke the record of BTS , who with their single Boy with Luv feat. Halsey had 74.6 million views in April 2019. No one else had reached the 100 million clicks as quickly as Blackpink, approx. 32 hours after publication. In total, Blackpink set five Guinness world records: most Youtube views in the first 24 hours after upload for a video, music video and K-pop video, as well as two records for the most-viewed premiere.

The second single should follow in July to August, the full album in September.
