biography

1996 to 2011: Early life and career beginnings

Jennie Kim was born in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, South Korea in 1996 . At the age of 9, she was on a trip to Australia and New Zealand with her family . A year later, she was sent to a homestay in Auckland , New Zealand to pursue a higher education at ACG Parnell College and learn the English language. In 2006 she appeared in the MBC documentary English, Must Change to Survive and reported on her experiences with the language and her life in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, her interest in K-Pop grew , especially the artists from YG Entertainment . YG specializes in hip-hop and R&B and has the most western sound of the three big companies in South Korea. Jennie liked this rather "dark" image, which is why she wanted to work at YG from the start. In 2010 she moved back to South Korea and attended an audition for YG. She sang Take a Bow by Rihanna and passed the audition, becoming a trainee with the company at the age of 14 . The contract ran for six years. For this, she had to oppose her mother's wishes, which Jennie wanted to send to the United States so that she could continue her school education there and take up a career as a teacher or lawyer. Jennie still got the full support of her family. Back in South Korea, she attended Chungdam High School .

2011–2016: collaborations and debut

In 2011, Yang Hyun Suk announced that preparations were underway for the debut of a new girl group called Blackpink. Jennie was one of the candidates for this girl group. In fact, it would be another five years before Blackpink were ready.

The final members of Blackpink were officially announced on June 29, 2016, including Jennie Kim. Since their debut preparations, the group members had to pass singing and dance exams individually and as a team at the end of each month. Jennie made her debut on August 8, 2016 with Lisa , Jisoo and Rosé with the single Square One. The second single Square Two followed on November 1, 2016 .

In October 2018 she appeared in Marie Clarie Korea magazine as a representative of Chanel . On October 18, 2018, YG announced that the group was working on new songs as well as solo debuts for all four members.
