JTBC ( J oongang T ongyang B roadcasting C ompany) is a South Korean cable television broadcaster based in Seoul . 25% of the shares in the station belong to the daily newspaper JoongAng Ilbo .
history
The JTBC station has been available in South Korea since December 1, 2011 via the cable network. In 2009, the media law on deregulation was changed in South Korea. As a result, four new programs were launched through four different newspapers.
The JoongAng Ilbo once belonged to the Samsung Group . Samsung already owned the TBC ( Tongyang Broadcasting Corporation ) station in the past , which began operations in 1964. However, the TBC had to stop broadcasting under pressure from the South Korean military government on December 1, 1980, and was forcibly merged with the public broadcaster Korean Broadcasting System . This resulted in the KBS2 channel. A spokesman for JTBC said the decision was made to open the channel on December 1, 2011, in memory of TBC, which last broadcast on November 30, 1980.
program
The drama series Sky Castle (2019) produced by JTBC achieved the highest audience rating for a series on South Korean cable television at over 23% to date. In the following year, however, it was surpassed by the series The World of the Married, also broadcast on JTBC, with an audience rate of more than 24%. The drama series Itaewon Class (2020) that was broadcast also achieved the top ten best ratings on cable TV with more than 16%.
