AOA ( Korean 에이오 에이 ; abbreviation for Ace of Angels ) is a four-member South Korean girl group that was founded by FNC Entertainment in 2012 . The group officially debuted on July 30, 2012 with the single Elvis and the single album Angels' Story . AOA's fan club name is "Elvis".

AOA originally had eight members. Youkyung left the group in 2016, Choa in 2017, Mina in 2019 and Jimin in 2020.

history

2012: Debut with Elvis

In mid-July 2012, FNC Entertainment introduced all eight members to the public using teaser photos.

AOA initially came up with two different concepts; as a normal group with choreographies or as a band with instruments. FNC Entertainment stated that seven of the members are angels (Choa, Jimin, Yuna, Hyeyeong, Mina, Seolhyun and Chanmi). Youkyung, on the other hand, is half angel, half human and would therefore only be there when the group performed as a band. To complete the concept, each member has an "angel name" in addition to the normal stage name.

AOA officially debuted on July 30th with the single Elvis and the single album Angels' Story . The music video for Elvis was released in addition to the version with all 8 members as a band version with five members.

On October 10th, the second single album Wanna Be was released together with the single Get Out .

2013–2014: Moya , Miniskirt and Like a Cat

On July 26, 2013 AOA Black released the single album Moya together with the single of the same name.

On October 14th, the fourth single album Red Motion was released along with the single Confused . The music video for Confused was released on October 9th. The lyrics for the two tracks on the album were co-written by Jimin.

On January 16, 2014, the fifth single album Miniskirt was released together with the single of the same name. With miniskirt , the group was able to achieve a victory at a music show for the first time.

AOA's first mini-album was released on June 19, Short Hair . The music video for the single of the same name reached number 6 on Billboard's list of “Most Viewed K-pop Videos Around the World” in June.

The Japanese version of Miniskirt was released in October and reached number 13 on the Oricon Charts.

On November 11th, the second mini-album Like a Cat was released along with the single of the same name.

2015–2016: Heart Attack , AOA Cream and Youkyung's exit

On February 25, 2015, the Japanese version of Like a Cat was released.

AOA's third mini-album Heart Attack was released on June 22nd, along with the single of the same name.

In August it was announced that AOA would release their first studio album in Japan. The album, called Ace of Angels , was released on October 14th and made it to number 2 on the Oricon Albums Chart.

At the beginning of January 2016 it was announced that AOA were preparing for their comeback and that they would release a new album in the first half of the year. It was also said that AOA Black will also release new songs. At the end of January, FNC Entertainment announced that Yuna, Hyejeong and Chanmi are forming a new subgroup and will release a single in February. The single I'm Jelly Baby was released on February 12 under the name AOA Cream .

On May 16, AOA's fourth mini-album, Good Luck, was released along with the single of the same name.

On October 15, FNC Entertainment announced that Youkyung had left the group and agency after their contract expired and was not renewed. Despite her departure, she would still be available as a guest musician for AOA Black.

Runway , AOA's second studio album in Japan , was released on November 30th .

2017 – present: Angel's Knock and Choa's exit

On January 2, 2017, the group released their first Korean studio album called Angel's Knock . At the same time, two singles, Excuse Me and Bing Bing were released .

On June 22nd, Choa announced her departure from the group. FNC Entertainment initially denied their exit, but confirmed it on June 30th.

On May 11, 2018 it was announced that AOA will return for the first time as a group of six on May 28. On May 28th, AOA released their fifth mini-album Bingle Bangle along with the single of the same name.

On May 13, 2019, it was announced that Mina would be leaving AOA and FNC Entertainment after their contract expires. The remaining five members of the group have renewed their contracts with the agency.

On July 4, 2020, Jimin left the group amid controversy over allegations of bullying by ex-member Mina against Jimin.
