The 1998 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place on September 10, 1998. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 17, 1997 to June 12, 1998. The ceremony took place at the Universal Amphitheater , Universal City , California . The moderator was Ben Stiller .

The winner of the evening was Madonna , who won a total of six awards, including the main prize Video of the Year . She was nominated nine times in total. The nominations were also Garbage with eight and Will Smith with six successful, but Garbage won no award.

The biggest scandal was the see-through outfit of Rose McGowan , who accompanied her then partner Marilyn Manson to the show. My partner at the time, however, the audience shocked with his outfit, consisting of artificial breasts, his choreography for The Dope Show of in which police officers were kissing and the guest appearance skimmed Model s Goddess Bunny .
