Ol 'Dirty Bastard (born November 15, 1968 in Brooklyn , † November 13, 2004 in Manhattan , real life Russell Tyrone Jones ) was an American rapper and member of the Wu-Tang clan .

biography

Jones founded the trio “Force of the Imperial Master” with his cousins RZA and GZA , which released a successful underground single as “All in Together Now Crew”. Together with both of them, he then founded the Wu-Tang Clan in 1992 . After six more rappers had joined the clan, they released their first album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993 . The album is a milestone in hip-hop in the 1990s.

The album placed numerous members of the clan prominently in public as soloists, but ODB received the greatest attention from the press and fans. His muddled, half rapped, half sung style, which shone with often bizarre humor and unfamiliar puns, became the trademark of the whole clan. There were no role models for this style; according to Method Man , his stage name comes from the fact that there is “no father of his style”.

After Method Man's 1994 publication Tical, Ol 'Dirty Bastard published his own solo album in 1995 as the clan's second artist. On March 28, 1995 Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version was released , the singles Brooklyn Zoo and Shimmy Shimmy Ya became hits, the album itself won gold. Producer RZA made the music even more minimalistic than on the group's debut album, so that ODB's rap was given a prominent place. His rather dubious fame also arose during this time: a report on MTV showed him how he took two of his seven children to a welfare office in New York in his limousine to collect the American welfare payments while his album was still in the Located in the top 10 of the charts.

On the next Wu-Tang album Wu-Tang Forever he played a much more reduced role than on the first release. In addition to the solo track Dog Shit , he only rapped on two other tracks ( Reunited and Maria ) and otherwise only had one hook and a spoken introduction.

He surprisingly stormed the stage at the 1998 Grammy Awards and began to complain that he had bought extra expensive clothes as he believed he would win the title for best rap album. Before he was led off the stage, he announced I don't know how you all see it, but when it comes to the children, Wu-Tang is for the children. In April 1998 he announced that he had changed his stage name to Big Baby Jesus, but couldn't explain why.

In 1999 he published Nigga Please , which was in parts even more bizarre than its predecessor. By The Neptunes single produced Got Your Money was a chart success and laid the foundation for the future career of the Neptunes, as well as for the singer Kelis , who sang to her the refrain.

As of 2001, he was jailed for 16 months for illicit drug possession. At that time, by order of the authorities, his physical and mental condition was also examined. His then music label Elektra published a best-of album. On the one hand, to benefit from the public that brought his problems, as well as to get out of the contract with him. Another album, The Trials and Tribulations of Russel Jones , was released on D-3 Records in 2002, also without the active participation of Jones. Along with earlier unpublished rap recordings of his, numerous guest artists appeared, including members of the Wu-Tang Clan, C-Murder and the Insane Clown Posse .

After he was finally released from prison in 2003, he signed a contract with Roc-a-Fella Records . Jones lived under official house arrest in his mother's house, and VH1 produced a reality show about his life. He began recording a new album and announced that he would work with electronic artists such as Carnage and the Fiasco, Fischerspooner and Massive Attack .

Death and aftermath

ODB could not finish the recording of this album. Two days before his 36th birthday, Ol 'Dirty Bastard passed away in November 2004 in a Manhattan studio. The rapper had previously complained of chest pain. He was advised to see a doctor, but did not take the advice seriously. After the collapse, any help came too late for him. He died around 6 p.m. on November 13, 2004 in New York. On November 15, 2004, the result of his autopsy was reported as having a myocardial infarction as a result of an overdose of cocaine in combination with tramadol . These two substances were found in his stomach during an autopsy.

The rapper left behind his wife Icelene and a total of seven children, among others from various other ex relationships.

Less than a week after his death, his music label Roc-A-Fella announced that it wanted to release ODB's almost completed CD Osirus in early 2005 . It was also announced that ODB had not deposited a will . Some of the mothers of his seven children were negotiating his legacy shortly after his death. ODB found his final resting place on November 18, 2004 at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, New York. In early 2012, his FBI files were made public.
