8 Diagrams is the fifth studio album by American hip hop - group Wu-Tang Clan . It was released on December 11, 2007 via SRC / Universal Motown Records. The album was released three years after the death of Ol 'Dirty Bastard and six years after the previous album, Iron Flag . Many rappers in the group had already released their own solo albums or were also active as actors.

8 Diagrams debuted at number 25 on the US Billboard charts and at number 9 on the top R&B / hip-hop albums with 68,000 CDs sold in its first week. In April 2014, 8 Diagrams had 202,000 copies to show. The album was generally well received and rated more positively than the last album.

background

8 Diagrams is the group's first album after the death of co-founder Ol 'Dirty Bastard, who died of a cocaine overdose in 2004. The title of the album was taken from the Chinese kung fu film The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter . The eight-member group, which had not released an album for six years, signed a contract for an album with Steve Rifkind's SRC Records in December 2006. The last four albums were all released by Rifkind's now defunct Loud Records label.

On August 5, 2007, RZA announced at the Virgin Festival in Baltimore that the album would be released on November 13, 2007, the third anniversary of the death of Ol 'Dirty Bastard. However, it didn't hit the market until just under a month later, on December 11th. In a statement about the comeback of Wu-Tang Clan, producer RZA stated:

“The time for our comeback is perfect, the stars are favorable. It's like the first time we started with Steve. We brought authentic hip-hop to a time when it was more pop or R&B. We put the focus of the music back to its original form, without elaborate studios or radio hits ... people want something that gives them adrenaline. We're here to deliver just that. How can hip-hop be dead when Wu-Tang is forever? We are here to revive the spirit and to bring new energy that has recently been lost. "

- RZA

After the New York premiere of Wu: The Story of the Wu-Tang, Cappadonna said the group recorded between 40 and 50 songs for the album, and that 14 of those were chosen for the album.

Artistic differences of opinion

In contrast to Wu-Tang's previous albums, in which mainly dark, gloomy and street-oriented beats were produced, producer RZA experimented a little more on 8 diagrams and built, among other things, orchestras or other new instruments into the beats. That led to internal disputes in the group, criticism came in particular from Ghostface Killah and Raekwon , who said that the new album does not have the "typical Wu-Tang sound". In an interview with US radio station Miss Info, Raekwon said that he and the rest of the group had released another album called “Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang ”will be produced without RZA's participation. In a later interview with the music magazine Vibe it was announced that “Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang “will be the fifth studio album by Raekwon, and all members of the clan with the exception of RZA will be represented on the album. Regarding 8 diagrams, Raekwon said: “RZA doesn't have to be on every album. I wanted to give other producers a chance. It's not about beef. We can stand on our own two feet. "
